Yeah, me either. My eyes really resist it. And after trying it a few times it messes up my focus for a bit.

People are mostly the same. It's just the cultural context that shifts, and mostly that changes slowly, even when tech changes rapidly.

This is the best non-fiction book I have ever read. It's great simply as a piece of writing -- and the story it tells is an interesting one. I liked it enough that after I listened to it on Audible I went out and bought a hardback vers

Boy, I don't agree with that last. It's a pretty interesting book, but the writing is pedestrian and there are far too many asides and stories that detract from the main points. By way of contrast, I read it because it was recomme

Yes! Also Richard Russo's "Straight Man", which might be my favorite of all these novels about campus life.

I first encountered his novel "Small World" in graduate school, and immediately became a fan. (It was on the reading list for one of my girlfriend's courses.) Along with other novels like "Lucky Jim" and "Strai

That seems more like a programmer expectations issue than something fundamental. Essentially, you have "do (call some function that returns a chunk of state) while (predicate that evaluates the state) ..." Hard to express without

Knowing that you are in a war for your existence -- which is how a lot of people viewed WWII -- does tend to refocus your objectives. I wish we would approach climate change this way.

I really liked this: "as a general rule, large established codebases produce 90% of the value." People see the ugliness -- because solving real problems, especially if business practices are involved, is often very messy -- but th

I would expect it to work badly whenever a person could easily cross a boundary. In larger cities -- say, New York -- it would suffer similar, but fewer, problems simply because the average effort of getting outside the city would be higher

I don't agree. There were a bunch of university protests over Gaza (slapped down for stupid reasons by university administrators under pressure from government), and, really, they just made noise, but they got a lot of people to notice

No, I'm not required to logon, and I didn't, but they absolutely do prompt for it and otherwise making ignoring their services less convenient. I put up with it for years, but I hated it.

Another option, if you can stand the bureaucracy: Go work for a university. Or possibly some level of government.

Not a Canadian, but no, a protest protests and gives voice to the disagreement. Blocking other people's rights is not just a protest and is likely to trigger action to protect others. That's how it goes everywhere that has right

There are a very large number of steam games that were written for Windows. There are similarly large numbers of commercial products with value for particular companies. Could they be emulated? Sure. Maybe not 100% (see Linux), but mostly y

Because it's true. When you ship a product and people look at it and go "meh", the product launch failed. There is literally no value in launching products people don't find value in.
