Interesting. My great nieces have Lenovos (Windows) that they use for school work and light gaming. They'd like better gaming laptops, but don't have them.

Must be circles. I just visited relatives, and brought my laptop as well as my phone; I barely used the laptop. But my brother always uses his, and his kids used laptops, and even one of my great nieces used a laptop. Did they have phones?

Because adopting having "doctors", for example, isn't really what made for better healthcare. We had doctors for centuries (arguably millenia) who were useful in very limited cases, and probably harmful most of the rest of th

I think it's an interesting piece, and calls us to consider how the technology will actually be used. A lot of things that are possible enable evil purposes as or more readily than noble ones. (Palantir comes to mind.) I think we hav

People come with all sorts of preferences. Telling people who love mastery that they have to be "fluid" isn't going to lead to happy outcomes.

I don't think the path was fixed by healthcare, per se. It was fixed by adopting scientific investigation. So I think your argument is kind of misleading.

It also illustrates the difference from the Beatles, who actually did compose most of their cool stuff (although Martin did help).

I don't favor any tax breaks for big tech until they actually start paying meaningful taxes. There have been far too many giveaways. The country is running a massive deficit, and the current "solution" is to balloon the defic

Agree that part of it is the increasingly toxic work circumstances. Many people get no health care, poor wages, and zero job security, so... they are pretty demoralized much of the time. And many work multiple gigs, so they are also tired a

It's handy if you have other services that are Windows-based, though. And, being a VM, it's fairly convenient to have multiple versions and to back up.

Also, there are other things hidden in the budget bill. For example, there is a clause that would make administration officials immune from being held in contempt: https://www.rawstory.com/trump-restraining-order/ (I d

At this point, we need some solution if we don't want journalism to vanish. And now, more than ever, we need independent journalism.

We need a solution to stuff like this. Unfortunately, right now we seem to be cutting everything in sight to help the rich, so... I don't see that help or hope on the horizon. Stuff of nightmares.

This is true, because Trump caters to them. It isn't clear that their numbers drove this -- I think rather it is a function of their willingness to be completely loyal to him, which is what he craves.

It's a noble goal. But the track record of the rich does not inspire confidence that this is the route our society should take in reclaiming these assets.

Terry Jones' documentary of medieval times made the point that the nobility was pretty similar to an organized crime family. Of course, he wasn't aiming at scholarly accuracy but trying to give viewers the flavor.

I think it might depend on the business. In some places, open source is the "safe pick" (particularly if you aren't selling software and are not worried about things like the GPL). In others, licensing concerns are huge.

Paul Krugman made this point in a podcast with Ezra Klein. People remember a time when manufacturing was 30% of the economy, but that will never return, because the economy grew far more than our appetites for stuff. His estimate was that e
