Yep, walked out of a tech lead role at a large corporate to start a new business with my wife, two weeks after the birth of our first child. We wanted to work on wildlife/animal tracking and identification through technology. It was ve

Can you give an example of any other domain where the entire domain is changed every decade? Space exploration comes to mind, but again, still based on physics and chemistry. The problem with the digital domain is we're literally just

Click on your account dropdown in the top header, choose Private Session. Now nothing you listen to will affect your recommendations. Come on, guys, I'd expect better from HN than complaining about features which already exist. https

Yes, if you want multiple accounts you pay for multiple accounts. It's a solved problem you just have to pay the $9 a month. I have two children, myself. I just installed second account on an old phone which has no SIM card in it, it h

Can't really complain if they offer Spotify Family which gives you 6 separate premium accounts, I think it's only double the cost of a normal Spotify account.

Ibuprofen has a really high LD50, at higher dosages it becomes anti-inflammatory.

I don't know what VA is but in the UK they will attempt to maintain any addictions so the withdrawal does not affect the patient. For example, if you're a smoker I guess they give you nicotine patches or something.

Companies do new stuff all the time which has no domain expertise, the experts are already employed in other places, hiring takes months, they might just be doing a spike to see if it's worth investing in. When GDPR came out, some comp

Long time ago we ran several large insurance websites, fairly standard SQL Server backend. Once day I got into work and a slightly panicky dev said "We need to change the primary key on all the tables" It was using an int and at t

I don't know if you're being deliberately obtuse or argumentative. It's not about transitioning between skillsets now, it's about future proofing. I went from doing corporate enterprise applications on Windows NT to embe

This is the problem with moving rural. Unless you own a lot of it, you're still just penned in, and now there's no local amenities or support. I moved into the countryside 12 years ago from a large town where I never had to drive,

What about all the people with other responsibilities like single parents or caregivers or people with disabilities who can't commit to a regular 9-5 job? They're not getting high paid gig jobs, just flexible hours.

Yeah, exactly right, we found it was a few iterations before we had the Base Event Schema defined with enough data for every event. Of course, with all these articles they miss out that you're not supposed to just do Event Sourcing, it

For a start, you're going to have to define your schema. Does one tree have one row or is it one case has one row? By updating at row level, you've instantly lost the ability to tell the user what time this data changed, unless yo

You nailed it! Those missing events will slot into place as offline devices come online. It works for any model where the use case doesn't really matter about up-to-the-minute accuracy, but for case generation and collation over time,

Exactly, part of the problem, tags go on at birth, so at what point do you stick the expensive tags on?

Yeah, we've tried drones. Problem is identification. E-tags on animals require a proximity of below a metre and stock are jittery around flying robots. Like you said, it's actually easier to get a quadbike and go look.

Yes, Correlation ID/Activity ID/Request ID, you need something that ties the event together. I think Event Sourcing is an amazing model for certain scenarios. Often, a hybrid approach can be better.
