This reminds me of dithering in computer graphics. Take an imperfect system and add noise to mask the imperfections.

I was a bit confused by the double Function call too. The string input to the first Function is: "return"ale\162t(\"\111\40lo\166e\40\171ou.\"\40)"" which when evaluated becomes: "alert(&quo

It's quite clever, the script gets a reference to the function prototype by making the string "constructor" and calling (0)["constructor"]["constructor"]. Calling Function on a string returns a new functio

I definitely found it the reverse. I've been using FB for 8 years and I found it very poignant too but most of the images seemed to be from the last year or two. I don't know if this correlates with the amount I posted those years

We're talking about a British article on an international forum, I think it's fair to not assume an American perspective and vocabulary.

I have just updated the code to remove the Function.caller.arguments part, this means you have to pass through the arguments variable manually. The arguments object is not a real array, this is true, but it has a length and is indexable, so

For me it was partly about providing type errors, but also very much about providing easy to write and easy to read type testing and sorting. Type testing in javascript can be a bit tough on the eye and this hopefully makes it easy to see w

The original motivation was providing a single way to deal with a combination of default arguments, optional arguments and the sort of homebrew polymorphism that a lot of libraries use, where a function takes 4 different types of thing and

That's right. The Function.caller bit was only added in quite late and the library works just as well without it, although you have to type a bit more.

I was unaware of the strict mode problem. I never use it myself, probably because I'm not developing for the web, but a browser embedded in a desktop app. I will have a look at providing a version that works in strict mode.

I'm really excited about sweet.js and JS macros in general, but I haven't had a chance to dive into anything yet. The major disadvantage for me though is it adds a pre-processing step.

I'm intrigued about the large amount of statistical programming that has apparently gone into this site. Quite a high number of lines in the world's favourite Gaussian distribution generator. No info at the link though :(

Great article, the last part about understanding programming languages and computers as user interfaces and human constructs is great. I love understanding why things are as they are. Too many people seem to see programming languages as the
