I find that using the Old Reddit interface with RES on desktop, and Apollo on mobile, more or less eliminates the icky parts of the Reddit experience. The catch is that both of those usage modes are pretty much at the mercy of Reddit Inc.,

Cycling should be for people of all ages, skill levels, and risk tolerances. I don't think it's sensible to be snarky to someone because you judge them to be taking too many precautions for their safety.
