In the early 1990s, Sound Blaster Pro sound cards came with a "psychiatrist" chat bot called Dr. SBAITSO which would reply in text and actually speak it out loud (showcasing the TTS). As a kid, I thought it was amazing, and I spen

I've had my personal $5/mo Digital Ocean VPS Wordpress site hit the top of HN before. I kept an eye on htop, but it handled it just fine. Exciting times.

Fossil and biofuel combustion kills 8 million people per year and has for decades [1]. Nuclear testing exposed some hundreds of people to high levels of radiation, some of which died or had shortened lives. Wide populations that got fallout

That's a perspective one can have, for sure. Something that's like 10 orders of magnitude below the known hazard level is not something anyone should raise alarms about to the general public though. Otherwise you'd have to go

Nope. Unexploded nuclear bombs are not meaningfully radioactive. Radiation starts in earnest after the larger atoms split.

Trace amounts of radiation do not poison the entire air. There is natural radiation everywhere, from rocks, from space, from our own bones. The amount remaining from the tests is not even remotely close to a health hazard. It's all to

Indeed, none of those articles said: "oh yeah and at these dose rates, you'd have to eat 330,000 kg of albacore to double your natural dose, and more than 10x more than that before you got a dose that has been shown to cause harm.

Nuclear engineer here. In school in Ann Arbor we ran a radiation detector overnight in the lab and were able to identify several nuclides in the air leftover from weapons tests. Fun times. Of course the dose rate from these nuclides was man

Same. I import with beets and then serve it up via Mopidy-MPD with the Iris plugin for UI and snapcast for sending it around to different devices in the house. Super nice.

I'm glad that the first section of this points to the official Django project documentation [1], which is one of the best project documentations I've ever seen. I programmed in Python for scientific computing for a dozen years bef

Maybe? Sampling on a sphere is computationally trivial in spherical coordinates and done in every undergraduate Monte Carlo radiation transport class as a homework. Knowing temperature PDFs is similarly easy, and so is sampling them. I will

Tangentially related, I had a fun time hooking the audio jack of my Geiger counter up to a digital input pin of an esp8266 the other day to generate random numbers from radioactive decay [1]. Not the fastest way to make random numbers. But

Including all accidents mentioned, nuclear energy is a few hundred times safer than coal, per TWh generated [1]. In fact, air pollution from fossil and biofuel combustion kills as many people that died and will die from Chernobyl (around 40
