Seriously. It's unbelievable how people on HN have noahc's attitude. Look, if you want to build a Rails app, go build the app and post it on HN afterwards. If you want to (1) develop an incremental optimization algorithm, (2) push the bound

These are excellent--halfway to my favorite LTJ Bukem mixes. Thanks for the links.

If this style of interviewing is so awful, then how do these companies have such great engineering teams? (1) Companies like yours (Foursquare) hire conservatively to avoid false positives. You can afford to do this because... (2) Great o

Seriously, it isn't close. Startup volume here is insane, there's a large number of big-scale successes (Tumblr, Etsy, Foursquare, Kickstarter), a mature group of companies (Google, AOL, Facebook by the end of the year), and a robust small

This has been addressed ad nauseum in the past: you don't have to move to the Bay Area to join YC. Lots of YC companies spend the summer in the Bay, then move back to continue working.

There is a blind CS professor at NYU. His name escapes me right now, but watching him navigate OS X (with its built-in voice guidance) is amazing.

Should've mentioned above: if it's no longer Friday, just feel free to reach me at the email in my profile.

I have to disagree. DuckDuckGo + keyboard is great for searching docs, Stack Overflow, etc., and the box helps me navigate with j/k.

Time for no strings! Like last time, I'll piggyback on Mike's thread and offer help on any type of statistical, machine learning, or econometric problems. I can also offer help with Python, as that's my language of choice.

Definitely not. I can think of a couple of teams in NY alone off the top of my head: Knewton (where I'm interning now), Foursquare (summer only I think?), Etsy (confirmed for summer)...

I disagree. Package management is a nightmare on Mac--bad enough that I work on a Mint VM at home for my OSS contributions and on a Ubuntu VM at work. This is a significant consideration for any dev. Note: I know MacPorts exists, and I'm no

I love these things and have wanted to participate for a while, so I'll ask you (Mike) something and offer other HNers my services. Mike, what do you think about the technology scene in south Florida? I'd like to move back home at some poin

Ohhh yep, Yegge has talked about this. Meanwhile, at NYU some MS students are excited to interview with them. Hope they know what they're in for...

Have an upvote: you're absolutely right, and I shouldn't have hammered out a response during class. Forgive me though--it's finals time, and I only caught this through HN (and not my RSS feed).

Serious question: are those points conventional wisdom? Aside from Engadget reviews or whatever. I'm biased, as I actually get a decent amount of my tech news from DF.

I had a bit about the irony of Gruber quoting PG's "Trolling" essay, but took it out. It really seems like Gruber trolls for views and ad money at this point.

Who is talking about quotas? ICS has revolutionized Android, but you wouldn't know it from reading DF. That's already a failure by Gruber, as a tech journalist.

I mean, you're right. 's/unyielding/strongly' and all that. I've read DF enough to know that Gruber points out small Apple missteps far more often than he points out Android victories (often; never).

"Class warfare"? Seriously? This is a phone review. Topolsky's point is that Sigeler's piece isn't just a phone review. As technology becomes affordable to more income levels, people need to make sure they frame the debate correctly. I

tl;dr : Gruber is too smart to pull shit like this, which makes his pundit-like editorializing even more disappointing. Gruber recently addressed criticisms about his lack of "objectivity" on The Talk Show [0]. He substituted the word "fai

That's fine, I'm just surprised you'd make such a sweeping generalization. Not all BigCos are the same--why would all startups be the same? I'm not a startup cheerleader -- "come change the world!" is the most overused pitch line ever -- bu

I don't get this sentiment--it completely ignores the differences between mature and fledgling startups. It's clearly not all unicorns and cupcakes, but there's a difference between "work for us at 2/3rds market plus 1%" and "we're VC-backe
