Oh man, things are getting worse with Gruber. What does data volume have anything to do with whether users use maps or not? I can see his argument holding water if he was refuting lower data volume, but he's not--he's trying to refute low u

I agree. Top iOS app developers like Marco are dying to move their apps to iOS 6 (according to their podcasts + blog posts), so I think we can measure app compatibility for the iPad 1 in months, not years.

Firstly as for your MacBook Air. OSX runs fine with 2GB and shouldn't be swapping constantly for browsing. And not sure why you are complaining that you got 200 euros for a 4 year old machine. This wasn't true for me on my 2GB 2006 Macboo

I doubt a large portion of Kill The Landline's potential market (like, say, my parents with cell phones, an unused landline, and zero desire to mess with GV) would want to worry about doing this.

You didn't have a perfectly working solution before, btw; Google Maps still has a lot of errors. I don't know if I'd make this comparison. The level of erroneous data in Apple Maps is just insane compared to Google Maps.

I agree about many companies using Python, but I've heard from former Googlers that most of their code is written in Java or C++.

I'll have to give the L4D games a shot--I hear they're excellent. Does Xbox v. PC matter at all?

I think I wrote that part while thinking about running around in Thief , hearing the guards call me a taffer. Memories... :) But yeah, I agree--DX was a mishmash of a game. I liked how it experimented with some FPS conventions, though--it

The first Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games. Great atmosphere, soundtrack, and level design. I should get my Gamecube and run through it during the holidays.

Ion Storm rivals Looking Glass Entertainment as one of the bigger disappointments of the 1990s PC gaming scene. Both companies produced an incredible roster of games -- Thief, Deus Ex, and the amazing System Shock series (which managed

Why would apple be less happy with 70% of the market than with 40%? I think the point is that Apple would lose a segment of the market that generates very low margins (or zero, if > $99 is a barrier to them).

I responded to this point (which was phrased as a question): You seem to be saying that 4 (3+2) should throw: TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for : 'int' and 'tuple'??? Parent wasn't saying that at all, and I was clarifying.

No, parent is saying that: >>> isinstance(tuple, ("foo", "bar")) True >>> isinstance(tuple, ("foo")) False which is correct. In Python, a single-element tuple must end with a comma--otherwise it is just that element,

Sorry, I expect the worst from the HN crowd these days. See my most recent comment for an example. NYC is notorious for its poor Verizon LTE coverage. Right now, the US LTE market is "Verizon," however, as AT&T has rolled out slowly and

I'm sorry, I thought you were going to claim Apple clearly ripped some UI elements off from Unity or Gnome or something. Instead, you're saying OSX, which is BSD-based, borrowed elements from...BSD-based projects? Wow. What's next? Are you

There are vastly better UNIX implementations (from which Apple has borrowed copiously) that will never be certified. Like who? And what has Apple copied from them?

Wait, is this an argument against a technology that (a) has been widely rolled out by Verizon, and (b) will be even more pervasive in the coming months and years?

The battery life is almost exactly the same. One phone uses LTE, while the other uses 3G. I'm also ignoring how the 5 is easily faster than the 3GS, which requires more power. All of the most popular apps still run on the 3GS, and run we

Interesting. Are any of them using Nexus devices? Also, I've heard repeatedly that iOS 6, and its new built-in Maps, lacks transit directions. Has that changed?

Right here. No map directions, hardware failures (home button is dead after two years), and Android catching up in UI responsiveness and app availability means I'm looking at the upcoming Nexus phones more than this.

I really don't see how Apple's actions some 30 years ago excuse obvious trade dress violations by HP. Even if we accept that Apple "copied" Xerox, it is still clear that HP is grossly copying the iMac design. How is that remotely acceptable

I hate this. You're attempting to re-litigate something in public court that was already handled in actual, real-people court almost 20 years ago. Read the Legacy[0] section of your link. Apple also licensed the tech behind Xerox Star. At l

I'd actually call it a feature, and not a bug or flaw, in Python. You can prototype something in Python (or another language with native hooks) very, very quickly. If that thing works, you can roll in ctypes or cython and get your code runn

This article wears its bias on its sleeve: Really, when we boil it all down, the main thing the iPad has going for it is the Apple Experience — and is that worth $200? For existing tablet owners (most of which are iPad owners), it’s hard t
