I've seen them on here. They're excellent technical posts that probably don't interest many of the main-page viewers here. Here's Jake Vanderplas on SVD algorithms for sparse matrices: http://jakevdp.github.com/blog/2012/12/19/sparse-svds-

I should know this, but how do you minimize model complexity with neural nets? Fewer layers?

First: great post! Don't let my comments deter you--I'm only sharing what I think is some constructive criticism. I think this should be titled "why use kernels," as the gain here comes from using an RBF kernel (and not just a SVM). Kernel-

I just made the jump from todo.txt to Workflowy and paid for pro service within a week. Project hierarchies really seal the deal for me, while todo.txt has a flat layout, even if you organize items by project or context.

Why not? Scraping is part of the data acquisition and cleanup process. You need to do it unless you're working with Bloomberg terminals or Census data.

Love GOG--they do a lot of work to get old games working on modern systems. Installing Fallout 2 on Win 7 was as simple as downloading, running the executable, and playing. I'm loving Baldur's Gate I and II right now, so here's a (potential

They're a YC team and they have fans here. I'd argue these are more relevant to our day-to-days than the endless stream of "Twitter and Instagram battle!!" posts.

Yes! Would love an invite to Lobste.rs too please. Looks excellent. (Don't have an invite as of 7pm EST 12/15).

Twitterrific for a no-frills Twitter client with a clean interface. The antidote to Tweetbot. NextDraft is a great "summary of the day's news" app. No frills, no Newsstand subscription, and it's free. The NYT app is a bit unstable, but it's

Yes on Goodreader. It's amazing if you're constantly trying to manage a collection of textbook PDFs or academic papers.

+1 to Baldur's Gate. It's the right mix of nerdy humor, deep gameplay, and play-for-15-minutes you want in a thoughtful iOS game. It's also sold me on picking up Baldur's Gate II from Good Old Games once I'm done.

I also like Note Taker (forget if it's HD or Pro) for notes. It lets you zoom in on a part of the page and write there, which gives you a ton of control over how your page is laid out. Great app for going paperless.

There are a lot of terrible companies that won't look at you for an ML/data science role without a PhD. I'm arguing that it's more serious than this: there are so many PhDs out there right now, companies will have no lack of skilled, well

This is a perilous route. Learning R and "machine learning" (probably meant as a catch-all for graphs, statistics, machine learning, and a dash of distributed systems) is necessary but not sufficient, since you'll be competing against peopl

People were tossing it around to describe a 400-person Twitter team in 2010 or 2011 (can't remember which).

Congrats to the Prismatic team! I see Bradford is floating around answering questions, so I'll shoot over two: (1) Is an iPad app on your roadmap? Anything you'd like to announce? ;) (2) You once had an excellent post on your personal blog

Had my first-gen Intel white poly MacBook for 5 years. Could've run it longer but a friend needed a new laptop so I passed it on.

There's probably a robust enterprise client base for it. I can imagine teams using Evernote over Google Docs, for example, and Evernote Premium gives you collaboration. I can see tons of arguments for going premium, too. Going paperless wou

There's so much sanctimony in this thread. "Ohh, I support the Humble team on principle!! This bundle destroys the Humble spirit!!" Do you support open, DRM-free software? Skip this release and wait for Humble Indie Bundle 7, like they sugg

Well, look at the article. It's written by a young guy who essentially consulted for this company for free for 5 months. I'd argue South Florida has it right: startups are absurdly glamorized right now, and in a region where everyone (eve

As an NYU student I was inundated with these messages for a bit. I seriously thought about replying to all to give everyone step-by-step directions on creating a Gmail archive filter, but decided it wouldn't really help too much.

You think that's bad? Check out NYU's Bobst library, where there are entire floors with Aeron chairs.
