Are there any good lightweight file managers if one did want to use a GUI? Using the shell is second nature to me but sometimes it's nice to browse with a mouse.

IP forwarding shouldn't be needed for end-user machines. I only ever set it on machines that need to route traffic.

I recently started using OpenBSD on my circa 2001 Pentium 3 rig for fun. It has 384MB of RAM and no SSE2. I use i3wm for the desktop (1024×768×80Hz on a CRT), urxvt for terminal, netsurf for browsing (no JS), leafpad for GUI editing, and VL

I can't imagine a phone being a component. Nintendo has always had a conservative take on communications between users. It's usually filtered or reduced to set of preset phrases or emoji/reactions. Animal Crossing let you fre

That's pretty wild. I wonder how many shops or intranets are still running on old NT versions for domain controllers and such. One of my workplaces had a couple Windows 2000 boxes running special medical software circa 2010 and we&#x27

I agree, I adore the Windows 2000 icon design. My retro PC runs XP but I've been slowly changing the icons to Windows 2000. Best of both worlds IMO - the classic design of 2000 but the updated kernel and runtimes of XP. I found a pack

Oh for sure, Syncthing absolutely works peer to peer. But I find it useful to have a central always-online hub for clients to sync to. For example, imagine you save a file on your laptop then put it to sleep. You turn on your desktop and th

I've been waiting for neumorphism to take off but it never has. I felt like it was a nice blend of the clean/modern look we have from today's flat designs, but with better ergonomics and shading to help distinguish elements f

Tangentially related - the low-poly retro horror game Cave Crawler (2023) touches on this concept (minerals growing on bodies). It's currently $1.99 USD and I thoroughly enjoyed a playthrough. https://store.steampowered.com&

I've never owned a keyboard cover, but one could bring a TKL or 60% mechanical keyboard for the full typing experience without a laptop - might be a good compromise for some.

I think it may have something to do with display:flex. CSS isn't a strength of mine but looking at the computed view, there's a wide inflexible margin on the right side that causes the text to wrap before it otherwise would need t
