To each their own. I just think that you should use the right tool for the job, not the most popular one. If your opinion comes into play when selecting a tool, you're doing it wrong. Sure, there's lock in and perhaps Microsoft is engaged i

You started a flame war over vendor lock in? What about language lock in? DBMS lock in? Or even the forbidden OS lock in? I don't care what you use, it has lock in of some kind. Get over it. VS2008, C#/VB.NET, ASP,NET, MSSQL are great tool

Your options are limitless, really but here are a few: 1. Pick a framework to make your PHP work less boring (CakePHP, CodeIgniter, Symfony) 2. Ruby on Rails or Python & Django 3. Slicehost ftw. These days you can find a cheap host for

I still think this marks the end of an era. Websites and web presence in general have become so ubiquitous that the need for Geocities no longer exists. That is in and of itself amazing. I grew up on Geocities, and to be honest, that's wher

IB programs really teach you a lot about life. Our program was actually inside an inner city school where the population not in the program had a very low rate of success as far as graduating and careers went. There is a lot of pressure inv

I used to work over at iWindsurf and iKitesurf and we had planned on doing something like that but it never went through. WeatherUnderground has been allowing user's to upload data from their personal weather stations (PWS) for years. The n

I answered this over on SO, but here's a copypasta: Really, this is a complicated question. I've worked for start ups, small development companies, and now one of the largest companies in the world. That said, here's my list: 1. Location: B

Why not have both? These articles are pretty annoying, honestly. Everyone seems to think you can't do both at the same time. It depends on the start up, and I realize that, but it isn't that clear cut and dry.

Very cool concept! Are you screen scraping for data or is there an API of some sort?

Strange, I fall on the lower quartile of the scale here. That said, I live in Florida where taxes are low and cost of living is low as well (not near what it is in SF). I charge based on what sort of work and who/what the work is for. If th

I'll agree with the others and say drop this guy without a second thought. That said, if you wrote the contract to include disclosure of source code you should be able to legally ask for it. That said, $2500 is a relatively small amount whe

I'm getting more than a little tired of the star programmer rivalry. To see a great site like HN join in would seriously crush me. I come here to read news, regardless of where it comes from and regardless of whether I agree with it or not.

Lying piece of tag soup. <3 Perl. Everything has its place, but Lord help me if Perl is really dead. I can only imagine the havoc that would be unleashed if all of the nightly & weekly Perl based data interfaces went down...

Magnolia was great, well, until it crashed. You could start groups and share each link with the group(s) you wanted to.

Personally, I think that would be an immature opinion. The language you write the application in has little to do with the outcome. I know of at least one company in town who moved from Ruby on Rails to ASP.NET recently. They were looking t

I'm just going to take a devil's advocate role here and say get a job. A start up is nothing without capital, and until you get funded that capital is you and your cofounder. Your savings, your time. A job means you can't put all your time

I came from a PHP and Coldfusion background and jumped into VB.NET/ASP.NET development after some brief self training through our company training portal. Basically, they gave me a copy of VS2008 and said okay, "We have this project that is

I can comment on this. My wife is on tmobile and my father is on ATT, both are using prepaid phones with swapped SIM cards. I know the Virgin mobile phones don't use SIMs (to my knowledge) as well as Tracphone, so those are useless.

If you are seriously looking to go to SF you should have no problem. I was looking for positions last year and the east coast just kept calling. That said, you will be working for a start up given your requirements which lends itself to the

The issue I have with slicehost is the limitation on operating systems. The whole point of a dedicated box would be for control. If I did this, I'd plan on running a Win2k3 VM as well as any number of *nix VMs. Amazon is offering the same s
