What you said is true, but you can also find horrible code written by people in the U.S, so is not an I'm an American and you not issue. I've seen projects like the one you mention above too, they were people who hired guys for $5/hour and

Why do you say "I doubt anyone would have me"? J1 visas aren't that difficult. You can just try reaching out and talking with people, a lot of companies do office hours, you can schedule meetings with them through Skype or Google Hangouts.
