Presumably you have to do an in-place upgrade if you use these? I can't see any mention of what key I am supposed to use (from the reservation tool) if I want to do a fresh install.

There's one clear cut use case where AWS/Azure are incredibly cheap - Disaster Recovery. At my last job, we maintained a small DB instance and nothing else but an empty VPC. Within 15 minutes, we could spin up the entire DR stack

500-miles email is a fantastic read - thoroughly recommended.

Yeah, I was talking about small to medium sized offices. For large deployments, you'll still need network admins etc, but my point was simply that the general need for these skills is in decline.

Some counter-points I've heard made: 1) Performance. Stored procedures are fast, meaning it will be longer before you need to scale out. 2) Security. If you only use stored procs, you're a lot less exposed to SQL injections etc. I

Can't help you with workflow, but I was on Notes for many years and to be honest, while the actual client is pretty terrible, the webmail client was OK. Not great ... but bearable.

Sorry, but I disagree - and my background is in networking. With AWS or Azure, no one cares about the network or servers. The only thing required is a decent link connecting you to the cloud and you are done. No one is going to hire network

Yeah, this is how I read it. With AWS, you just click a few buttons or upload a template and you get what you need. Infrastructure as code completely takes away a bunch of work that used to be outsourced to India.

Not necessarily. In Australia it is increasingly common to see 'moonlighting' either prohibited outright or have the company attempt to claim ownership of it.

Couple of things: Can you sell your code? If not consider open sourcing it. Either you get some money or you get some kudos in the community. If you still want to work in startups, look at the post a few pages back for people looking for fo

Agreed, but certain harmful/negative things ARE stored in your fat cells (THC from marijuana is one such example) and these do get released during extended fasts as your body burns fat. I don't think this is really in doubt.

Is this safe? How do you know what your limits are? I thought around 21 days you were at the point of starvation? What about your weight? How over weight are you (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm assuming someone with a normal BM

What type of fasting did you do? I've done 5 day water fasts before, but I don't know how comfortable I would feel extending that to 11 or 20 days!

Do you have any references for the electrolyte requirements? I just add a small amount of salt to the water I was drinking during a fast, but never had any idea how much I should or whether I should ...

I don't this this is correct. I've read a few articles on this (trying to restrict my reading to published studies as far as possible) and it goes roughly (from memory) glucose/sugars first, then fat, then muscle. You may beg

I just finished a 4 day water fast. I've done 3-4 days a few times over the last few years and they all seem to follow the same pattern for me at least: Day 1 is really hard (all I can think about is food and the hunger is intense); Da

You only get one option when you 'cancel' the trial. This is exactly what they told me - it's a lie.

I should add that I have no issue with paying for services - even being forced OFF free services with appropriate notice. But this is deceptive, plain and simple.

This happened to me. THE TRIAL IS A TRAP! Seriously, do NOT test this out unless you want to be put on the paid version of Google Apps. It's completely underhanded and false ... they will feed you some rubbish about how you 'cance

I wish to god this news had arrived 2 days ago on April 1st :( Ian (M) Banks is amazing and will be sorely missed. I can't believe there won't be any more Culture novels.

I'm with Henry ... the scatterplot is fundamentally no different to two histograms side-by-side (though it is marginally easier to read).

I don't understand why you think utilising RAID across EBS volumes is insane. For years, if people needed more IOPs than a single drive could deliver, they utilised RAID to acheive it. How is this any different?
