Google has always been an evolutionary company. They are obviously working towards a single store that supports music, movies, books, Android apps, Google TV apps, and soon Chrome apps. I'm not sure why the should the Play Store back into "

To an extent. Last year not many people had tablets or Chromebooks and the gadgets are usually top of the line or running an OS that is no consumer ready devices are running yet.

Any of the files in Google Docs format (docs, spreadsheets, presentations, etc) already support versioning and history. I don't know how that effects the total storage however.

I think the gadget gifts is more about making sure developers have the hardware to develop for. If I don't have an Android device there is next to zero chance I will write a Android app.

You don't have to root the Verizon Galaxy Nexus to run Wallet. You simply have to install the Google Shopper app and auth it first.

IE 8+ has dev tools. They are not designed very well but they provide a lot of the functionality of Chrome/Fx.

Looking at the Web Components overview it doesn't add any addition request unless you build it that way. It basically seems to add HTML templating and a cleaner API for working with events and modifying nodes.

I expect that Chrome apps will get transitioned to Google Play at some point as well as whatever future platforms Google supports. It makes sense to be more generic in that case.

That is not entirely true. If you are authenticated your home_timeline is embedded in the page for instant rendering. Once Twitter moves away from #!'s individual tweets will be embedded as well.
