Not offended. Our team has a long history in open source and have seen both the triumphs and challenges over the years. It's very difficult to build a sustainable client-side open source tool without some other business off to the side

We'd like to ensure that Replicache continues to exist and that we can continue to support it. So yeah, we proudly charge for it.

I don’t understand how this comment relates to my tweet. I agree with you that nobody knows how to do anything and won’t until they start. That’s why you really want to spend some time working with highly experienced people, in whatever car

The same technology that makes realtime collaboration (e.g., figma) go is the technology that makes it possible to build high performance single-user apps that you can open on your phone and desktop at the same time (e.g., roam). It's

Yes I have known many people who have made this transition, and I myself did ~5 years ago. It takes most people about a year to figure themselves out.

It will be a conflict. But you can commit the revert to a different branch and run both schemas at the same time. This provides a lot of flexibility! Check out https://www.dolthub.com/blog/2022-04-29-dolt-revert/

Sigh. Databases seems to be one of the last bastions of ivorytower-ism in software engineering. Databases aren't magic. They are software. And as you say, there is a deep well of literature, and almost all interesting modern databases

To be clear, I think it's great for Firebase to have competition (same feeling as e.g., supabase). But the "you can only load documents" argument doesn't seem technically correct to me. Except for maybe in the sense that

As a user of CF workers, the API is clearly designed to allow the runtime to redeploy e.g., for patches. Example: there is no notification when your worker is unloading. It just dies. This is sometimes annoying as a developer, but it's

Hi Elliot! I think it's more complex than that. Chrome (all web browsers) have a massive and ancient attack surface -- all of HTML, JS, CSS, every DOM and web platform API, every image codec, video, and on and on and on. CF workers h

1/ is not correct. I worked on Chrome for many years. Processes were frequently reused across tabs for many reasons, including the window.open() example that kenton mentioned earlier, but also just resource exhaustion.

Yes! I have long felt like there are CRDTs possible that maintain complex application invariants (that is, have transactions). But when I sat down to think about it I realized that CRDTs make the problem far harder than it needs to be for t

This demo downloads the entire React issue repo into browser storage so that the UI can do filters locally with no waits. Also the entire thing updates live between collaborators if multiple people are online at the same time.
