As of this writing, the "newest" chrome is either 12, 13, or 14, depending on which stability channel you're on. Woo!

Totally agree, hence the "mostly terrible". I was just brainstorming about how to achieve the guarantee "shortest URLs on Earth" if that was one's goal.

I didn't understand this UI at first. URL shorteners are very common and they always have the same UI: Enter long URL, get short URL. This UI has an extra step that is small and somewhat hidden, so I kept missing it and wondering why nothin

Did you investigate requesting the files directly from the filesystem, like "file:///home/monkey/.js/google.com.js". You'd need to tell users to enable file access for the extension though chrome://extensions/, since that isn't enabled by d

Answer: the inner class can only access constant locals :(. So you have to put any mutable state in members. Blech. This might work for some cases, but would be a huge pain in the ass in others.

I am not super familiar with all the details of Java inner classes, but why can't you get most of the way there by doing something like: DB.open(new Runnable() { public void run() { // ... do stuff here ... } }); You

The article has an example of saving $189 (about 50% of the published price of the ticket in question), and a post in this thread had an example of saving 500 euro on a transatlantic flight. So it's not always trivial amount of money.

Autoupdate is a responsibility that application developers should take seriously. If the latest version is not better than the previous for users, they will leave. That is as it should be.

Chrome has taken the same approach Firefox did: We can't prevent this from happening so we try to provide a good way for other software to do it, so they don't do it in terrible ways: http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/external_exten

It's a bit difficult to implement sync of arbitrary data in a Chrome extension now. The extension developer has to setup their own storage and implement their own sync code. Either that, or some developers just store their data in the bookm

Engineers don't typically design and configure their own systems. There's a hardware group that does that, and engineers are just presented with a menu of choices. Off the top of my head, I'd say that clean Chromium builds take my linux mac

The 'standard' engineer configuration is a linux or mac workstation, a linux or mac laptop, and a 30" flatscreen. You can get additional hardware with manager approval, which, in my experience is typically a quick rubber stamp when within r

Time in web applications is not used looking up array lengths - it's used in IO, layout, and DOM manipulation. If iterating through arrays was found to ever be a noticeable issue in practice, the Closure compiler could just be modified to e
