I really wish the sections on password hashing included info on what parameters should be considered secure. Recommending Argon without explaining how to configure it properly is not great.

Of course it's additive, but potential clean energy supply is not capped at current levels. To clarify whit an example what I meant re other industries: In order for transportation (cars, trucks, ships, planes) to switch to clean energ

What's usually missing from these conversations is that the moment clean energy becomes cheaper than fossils, bitcoin miners will instantly switch to it. So yeah it's bad right now, but the problem will likely resolve itself (unli

I tend to run into performance regressions maybe once year after upgrading one of their non-Intellij products. I suppose this is because they mostly use Intellij internally so less dog fooding for other products.

My rule of thumb: if the script needs argument parsing or any sort of error handling/cleanup, I’ll write it in Python 3.5 instead of bash.

Don’t read too much into this — they are just catching up with GCP and Azure here. AWS has a history of introducing half-assed products with great fanfare when the lack of such a product could be a disadvantage for customer acquisition (thi

I look at the reviews, the number of items sold, and don’t pick the cheapest one. The best is if there are reviews that show a mask cut open and you can see whether it has the required number and type of layers. I’m not too worried about un

OP here. I've started gathering data on KN95 mask prices after seeing the same KN95 products from AliExpress being sold for 10x prices on European marketplaces. My goal with this project is to raise awareness about alternative marketpl

Fair points. For the record, re 2: The GPT family of models (and all neural networks for that matter) can estimate P(X | Y), but have no way of computing whether X -> Y or X <- Y.

OpenAI would naturally optimize for the tests published by Marcus as a critique of GPT-2, yet GPT-3 still fails physical reasoning spectacularly (the one test needing casual reasoning the most). There are two broader points here: 1. The lac

We know from John Boyd that getting into the opponent’s OODA (observe-orient-decide-act) loop is what wins these fights. If the AI has perfect state information, then it’s no wonder that it beat the human pilot who has to go through all fou

There is a broader point here: maximizing local efficiency in systems leads to greater fragility overall. The current COVID crisis highlights this very well with shortages due to global supply chains.

There is one issue that I haven’t seen mentioned: testing. The real problem with duplicated code in my opinion is that it either remains untested or bloats your test suite. And a bloated test suite can slow you down to a crawl.
