I'd argue that it's not search at all. It's ads. If you make things free, then your competitors have to also bring their prices down or remove all cost. To then pay for their service, or augment their revenue, they need ads. Which Google ca

Actually, that's what I like about Linus. I find it humorous, but I also appreciate a "no bullshit", direct approach. He has it in spades, and he backed up his assertions with hard data.

In this situation, wouldn't Chrome OS be a better fit? You could have simpler computers, and therefore cheaper hardware, by moving features to the cloud.

I would genuinely like the option to use GNOME 3. I'm considering moving to Fedora to try it. It would also be great to see Systemd used. Rather than Upstart. A global menu and a launcher (like Gnome Do) are some of the first things I insta

I wouldn't take it too seriously. Many of the major tech companies and investors have significant operations in the valley, which requires a large portion of the talent to live in the valley. These people then proceed to start other compani

Shouldn't this article be more accurately titled as: Innovations in Human Interface Devices? It doesn't seem particularly relevant to UI design, other than that they affect UI design.

You've missed the point. It's not the automatic updates by themselves, it's the manner in which they're built (fast, simple, unobtrusive) combined with the 6 week release cycle. With that pace of development, and a deployment system that wo

They have very different programming models, think Simula versus Smalltalk. You can use the two-headed beast that is Objective-C++, but there's varying levels of compatibility between the languages (in the 64 bit ABI, they share exceptions,

Reusable in the component sense. On Android you can use intents to let apps work together, you can get one app to manage your podcasts, and another app to play them at the speed you want. So you don't need to have the ability to adjust the

Android's programming model is also completely different to iOS's, taking a reusable component approach which, in my opinion, is much better.

Andy Rubin has said that they are developing functionality that allows a developer to design a tablet application which will work equally well on a phone. Something about designing an application as a series of panes. I believe it was in hi

And as the article you point to states, it radically changed under Google, from a C++ standalone application to a in-browser application.

The other thing that bothers me is that people are screaming blue murder as if they had no alternative choice of browser. If you don't like Chrome's decision (or Firefox's, or Opera's), use another browser. You can still choose to use Safar

Let's rephrase this: "Except for the fact that as a web site, all of my existing HTML already works in IE6. All of my HTML tools support IE6. Every other device I need to view web content content too including Windows mobile devices, Window

You might be interested in tup ( http://gittup.org/tup ) in that case. It finds dependencies by preloading a library that tracks all the file accesses that a program makes. IMHO I think this is a nicer approach than scanning strace output.

For me, I find Lua has more clarity and consistency than Python. From the design of the language, to its implementation, to it's C API --- it's a very beautiful language.

Just don't bother supporting it. This will either force them to get their act together, or frustrate consumers who'll proceed to move to a better platform.
