One of the common use-cases that pops into my head is as an equivalent for Flickr except massively de-centralized. There are obviously many dis-advantages to using a non-centralized system, largest in my mind is the loss of the community fe

One of the nicest points of this idea is that it leverages existing technologies really well. eMule requires both parties involved in the transfer use the same software. With Unite the receiver can just use their normal browser. I think tha

Well said. Unfortunately I really don't see the situation changing any time soon. Bands like Radiohead can afford to use alternative distribution models because they're already well known. Newcomers don't really have too many viable options

Fair point, but I think that it's a reasonable equivalent to the 'Band <-> Merchandise' comparison. I think it's worth noting too that with several years experience in the music industry* I found that most musicians I knew were unab

The same could be said of the open-source software model. Selling support is not exactly "monetizing the software itself", but it still pays the bills... I think that selling merchandise is a great way to get income, a friend's band (who ar

Yeah, it's starting to sound like something I'm going to just have to muddle through. The main reason I'm embarking on this project is just as a learning expedition more than anything else. So implementing everything from scratch is not nec

It's generally fairly steady at the moment, but I would like it to be able to handle motion in the future. I'm using the built-in iSight on my macbook as the camera, so theoretically I should be able to get some data from the macbook's buil

That is certainly a valid way of doing it and is the methodology that I have used in several search-engine projects in the past (like this: http://intrasitesearchsupport.com/ ) However in this case I am offloading the work of building the

As far as I know most auto form-fillers fill the form based on values in the ID and Name attributes. I.E. The field named 'email' gets an email address. In my experience if your honeypot field has a nonsensical name or is named something li

Unfortunately I cannot come close to recommending Joomla. Looking through the core code of the system is an exercise in frustration at best. While the code is not necessarily all super-bad the documentation is lacking in the extreme. I woul

Noted! It may not be feasible for the first stage of the process though as the system does not actually know how many URLs are in the site. I'll definitely have a look into that though.

Difficulty with the W3C validator is actually why I designed this. Their validator doesn't allow you to check all of a site in one go. You have to go through page by page. Even on a relatively small site that can take a lot of time!

I also meant to say: re: "Framework isn't the issue in this case" I agree. It is possible to turn out nice code in PHP and write fast, reliable apps. That being said Rails has me addicted to the idea of unit tests within easy reach. I'm not

The reason that both validators are consulted is because they can pick-up different errors. The WDG validator is _much_ more reliable when it comes to finding unicode issues and that has saved my ass at least once. Your other thoughts are t
