The reason for it in terminals is much more directly linked to the IBM punched card format.

It is complete, and I’ve found it extremely usable when writing code to trawl over a large number of class files. Looks like it should be good for code generation as well but I haven’t used that yet.

True, but many of them have had bugs in printing or parsing such numbers, and once those creep in they can cause real long term problems. I remember having to maintain alternative datums and projections in GIS software because of a parser e

I have also found scale model building to be a deeply relaxing hobby, and Tamiya kits are definitely some of the most rewarding and pleasant to build. They also make superb tools and paints which I would hate to be without.

I was curious because there is a much larger training corpus for Lisps, so if the problem really is one of training data rather ordering then this would be a way of showing that.

And without knowing that in advance I’d have assumed that link would have been to a commit or PR. A link to a project is useful, but a succinct description of a project can be far more helpful. Something like, “tl;dr: Infinite Mac (the soft

So several people in this thread have talked about academia giving you a network, and getting jobs via that, but have also conflated that with companies only hiring from particular schools. The network of contacts you make through universit

I think Gavin Bierman is an unsung hero as far as steering the Java language is concerned. I had the privilege to sit next to him in the office when I was working on TruffleRuby, and our conversations on language design were always elucidat

C64 BASIC was bad compared to BASIC on the Spectrum, and terrible compared to BBC BASIC on the Acorn machines. Sure, you could POKE your way to doing everything, but compared to having OS routines for most things, and an assembler accessib

You seem to be conflating life, multicellular life, and intelligent life. Life appears to have developed on Earth pretty quickly, multicellular life took a long time to appear, and we are only aware of one species that developed civilisatio

Then tried Little, Big by John Crowley and the relationships were probably wrong. I mean, Sylvia might be related to George Mouse, but probably should not have a family connection to Daily Alice.

Tried Book of the New Sun. Apparently Terminus Est (a sword) is Severian’s companion, and it completely fails to mention Dorcas. Oh well.

Books were produced before computers, and with very good typesetting. One difference between websites and books is that theee is a feedback loop with books where somebody ia at looking at the layout and either adjusting the spacing subtly,

That’s how I started as well. Much nicer to program than the spectrum, and taught me about parsing in the worst way when I discovered my text adventure couldn’t have a variable called torch because it was. Parsed as to rch.

That may have very little to do with refresh rate itself, and far more to do with the image processing and latency introduced by the monitor in different video modes.

Ah yes, that was always entertaining. All the different ways additional metadata could be encoded was so much fun if you were dealing with geographical data.

If you really needed it in memory you’d use one of the file APIs that will map it and present a direct byte buffer view over that memory. Those APIs use long as their offset unlike the 32 ints used by arrays, and would avoid having to copy

Just because your initial fractal path is infinite does not imply that a line offset from it is also infinite (even for an infinitely thin rope), at least if the offset version is not self intersecting.

Excellent advice. It’s also very important to know what any micro benchmarks you do have are really measuring. I’ve seen enough that actually measured the time to setup or parse something because they dominated and wasn’t cached correctly.

I use emacs, and although I have LSP configured I switch projects and branches often enough that I don’t rely on it working. Finding definitions is normally pretty easy because code bases have structure, but occasionally can be tricky if th

Okay. If the call was from within the UK then I think the 0441 code would have been Swansea, but that would have required 3 numbers being cut from the middle.
