The pdp-1 has two architectural registers: AC and IO and they're not addressable as memory. The PDP-10 has a similar internal structure but fetches and stores the accumulator from/to memory* for instructions that use it. * in the

If you have a program 'finddir' that just prints out the directory, you could simply to 'cd `finddir`' or make that a shell alias 'ncd'.

The chronology is wrong. dash-options came before pipes. The first edition already has them while pipes came in the third edition.

That's an implementation detail. The submission was about architecture.

You mean as opposed to the other architectures mentioned in the article? ppc, mips, itanium and alpha. Two of which are utterly dead, one of which looks like it's dying (mips) and one that is little more than a niche product (ppc).

I wouldn't say the x86 is the weirdo in these cases, it's just not a RISC.

That's so cool. Just a few months ago I reversed a bit of the GOAL runtime in an effort to understand how it worked (aap/goal on github) but I didn't dream of seeing everything decompiled. great work

I would disagree on that. Parsing theory made it easier to write parsers, not harder. Separating the process into lexical and syntactic analysis makes for a much clearer structure than some ad-hoc parser. And writing a recursive descent par

The PDP-10 has variable width byte pointers, but 8 bit bytes are what caught on.

I wrote a B compiler: https://github.com/aap/b it generates the original threaded code and has a runtime for amd64, mips32 and riscv64. should get the pdp-11 one working too sometime... Documented the original pdp-7 an

The B version for the Honeywell 6070 was compiled. B on the PDP-7 and -11 was interpreted. In fact I have a writeup on the threaded code for these two: http://squoze.net/B/

Have you considered looking into PDP-6/10 spacewar? We have two versions using the 340 display (which I've even played with friends, sadly not on a real 340 of course) and one for the Knight TV.

The first B compiler was actually written in TMG, and once it was bootstrapped that way in B itself. BCPL was only the inspiration for the language.

There was no first computer. The further you go back the less it becomes a computer, the further you go forward the less it becomes a first. I can really recommend the book "ENIAC in Action" on this matter and of course on the ENI

Thank you for your input! For shaders I'm never sure if I should do something dynamically or switch to a different shader, but it makes sense of course to kill the alpha test code if it's not used. As for MSAA, our support for tha

There have been emscripten ports of this already. Distributing the assets is probably the most problematic thing.

I think everybody did the thing he was interested in most. For me that was rendering, physics, vehicles, camera and ps2 specific stuff like VU0 collision detection.

Pretty much, but also our goal is to recreate the code in a way that R* could have plausibly written it. And that implies no C++11.

R* was a lot more open at the time and I guess they wanted to help them implement a multiplayer mode. that was before the whole hot coffee story.
