> Taking Calculus at not-Stanford may have led to a very different result. Thomas Sowell, in Inside American Education , argues that promoting students to more difficult colleges while ignoring SATs is not doing those students any favor

In probably 1976 for $1 I bought a one-page schematic for such a thing, from classified ad in the back of a magazine. I suppose it was a related version, but IIRC it relied upon 74123 style monostables.

One bit of advice I took from an old decluttering book: You can only sentimentalize a limited number of things, so any mementos of yours beyond what are displayed on a single set of shelves should be stored/rotated or discarded.

Given the yield of useful content vs. rock in mining, I suspect the more limiting factor is space for all the mining, not space for disposal of the 0.1% metal etc yield for making industrial goods.

I don't know if I dreamed this or read the idea somewhere. It would be to have a nuclear reactor submerged in a canal (achieving cooling) and it could be propelled (via tracks on the side) from place to place. Don't pump the water

Wheel-steering or axle-steering perhaps? Some actual locomotives have linkages to consistently steer individual axles to match the overal curvature of the track.

My impression from the first picture in the article was that these might be so tightly coupled car-to-car, a single car tilting (L/R) into a hole might be impossible. More fancifully, imagine they were so tightly linked wrt front/

Three-quarter- or one-inch diameter EMT could give a similar look, be easier to cut (if required), be less expensive, and be strong enough. It might take a little figuring how to do the joins, but that can be the case with threaded iron pip

There's also a YT video showing troubleshooting on an LCD TV down to a bad multilayer ceramic cap. Used a microohm-meter to identify the shorted cap without replacing all of them.

YT brought me this[1] next, another jolly bunch with explosives. One of them before an attempt with water between the explosive and the target wall: I predict it will either go through or the wall will be really clean. [1] https:/

I also once heard a vacuum cleaner salesman say (and yes, that used to be a thing) -- we know we can make vacuum cleaners less noisy (drop the universal motor IIRC), but people buy vacuum cleaners assuming the noise == power.

I've imagined utility in making a crown molding be a c.a. 10cm angled piece with space behind, for just these reasons. Held with screws of course, or otherwise removable and replaceable.
