But how would companies with lots of users provide notice otherwise? Apple is not going to be sending out letters to all XYZ million users of iTunes when they change the Terms of Service.

I second Wordpress. It's also easy to modify if you'd like to make changes that haven't already been made by others through the many plugins and templates available.

I think I'm in that "more tolerant" crowd, but the pictures made me stop reading pretty quickly. Just doesn't look like something I'll be interested in even if the content is good.

As a third year law student and fairly experienced web programmer, I feel like I can maybe weigh in on this: What seems boring to one person is the other person's reason to live! I'm surprised by how thrilled many lawyers are with their pra

Don't underestimate what the parent poster says about "slow to pay". Everyone is. Think months to get paid instead of two weeks like regular employment.

Here's an 1883 US Supreme Court case on licensing a patent: http://scholar.google.ca/scholar_case?case=85702692636686956... Licensing law has really only taken off in the 20th century I believe, but there's older stuff that's very related

There's also some very useful personal observations on HN that add more detail to a story when people have more knowledge about it than the article. I think this is a valid place for first person.

I think your definition is the more standard one. I think the parent post meant to say "deposit". Retainer is usually "$2000/month for up to 20 hours of work".

I think buying a shirt is different from buying a book. The author got exactly what he wanted. He wasn't expecting a different book, or even one with a slightly different colour, or a different fit. The real problem is that merchants can'

The problem you've raised is one that actually is addressed by the way that bills become law in the US (whether it works or not is a whole different question...). Congressional bills go through a committee process where in theory people who

To make that task even more complicated, people don't agree on what many of the rules are. Your "law compiler" would have to take in input and have output that's maybe this, or more likely this, but it could also be this...

If by broad strokes you mean "don't kill" then sure, but the actual details of how the legal system treats killing people is rather complicated. There are a variety of exceptions and different penalties depending on how the death happened.

Canadian here: Your post is kind of at odds with the final question you posed. You can have the money AND not sacrifice health outcomes. As you said, Cdn and US governments spend the same amount of money for the same outcomes.
