Optically, they're kind of like cameras. I wouldn't be surprised if early camera designers looked to mammalian eyes for inspiration. But once you get to the retina all bets are off. That's the point of this article.

Another interesting fact: every time your eyes move, you're blind for a couple milliseconds. But you never notice this because your brain fills in these gaps in time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccadic_masking

I find it interesting that there are two distinct bands in the response time plots. Any ideas what the two represent?

At 1500 suspension letters per day, 365 days per year (optimistic...), 1000 false positives per year is a 0.1% false positive rate. I think that's a fairly good rate if a false positive only meant that a human had to verify a person's ide

I'm no legal scholar, but I think I see the distinction. By ex post facto , the US Constitution refers to a law that allows prosecution of offenses that occurred before the law was passed. That allows for all sorts of horrible abuses of po

You can't do medicine without seeing that there is a problem, correcting the problem, and then verifying that the problem is solved. No one is debating that. What we're debating is whether chiropractic is medicine .

Will this project "emulate" a human brain down to the subatomic level? Down to even the atomic level? The short answer is that each part of the simulation, from ion channels and synapses to cell bodies to network topologies and cell distr

Redis scripting requires that the code be transmitted in each request. For now, yes, but antirez has said that he's considering adding an EVALSHA command or something that will execute an existing script by the hash of the source code.

What about infant mortality? If a million babies are born in the year 234BC, and die before 233BC rolls around, they won't be counted in the population for either year.

My theory is that it's more about the judge's blood sugar than about the break. Here's a Science Daily post about one documented case of blood sugar affecting decision-making: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100125173444.ht...

Cute idea... but really this isn't measuring MIT's mood, but it's sociability. When people are alone, they tend to have a neutral expression regardless of their mood. This is also true in public but non-social situations like sitting on a b

Yes, presumably there is a difference, but it's not that much. The axons that conduct motor signals to the skeletal muscles have a conductance speed of 80-120m/s [1]. In 70ms (100ms - 30ms), at 80m/s, such a signal would travel 5.6m. [1] h

You're right, my mistake. I had it in my head that Zoroastrianism was first, then looked up its origins to get a date, but didn't double-check it. It looks like Judaism pre-dates Zoroastrianism by a couple centuries, and Atenism (emerging i

Yes, iOS uses a filesystem under the hood. The applications just never expose it to the user. As an application developer you should be aware of it, but as a user? it doesn't matter one bit.

My theory is that this isn't a pun, but rather a term that's no longer in use. I seem to remember that some early elevator systems had two connected shafts and two cars, instead of one car and a counterweight like modern elevators. In this
