The interpretation around what "linking" means in the context of the GPL is a full-time job. At the least, the literal interpretation I was raised with has never been the official position of the FSF. For example, just because you

Let's not forget multiple mobile networks across Europe went down on the same day last year because Ericsson(?) let a cert expire on some internal management system that had not been updated. SSL cert renewal is one of the great unsolv

This simply won't die, will it? I mean, while we're at it, let's advocate abandonment of all higher level languages because essentially they all boil down to machine code, and nobody could recommend working directly with mach

Let's try and simplify things here: the post we're both currently commenting on relates to doing file IO via nmap . Of course 'avoiding all use of virtual memory' is ridiculous, but nobody except you is suggesting that,

If a process was swapped out and a fault fails to bring a page back due to an IO error, you can at least catch (I think) SIGBUS. But this just reinforces the point: nobody really understands virtual memory, even people like us that think th

So a fork of Qemu that makes no promises to keep AMD support, and uses words like "leverages". Its not clear why this needs to exist, as opposed to working with upstream to produce a single tree that can be built with a slimline p

Linux hit a related situation: a harmless null pointer dereference was treated by GCC as a signal that a subsequent isnull test could not be true, causing the test to be optimized away. https://lwn.net/Articles/575563&#

Zstandard is awesome, there is nothing else close to it that I've seen. There are plenty of codecs that give you either obscene ratios or low CPU usage, but none that support both in combination. Zstandard on its highest setting easily
