It is a proxy, so if you don't explicitly add keys with a middleware the API will still need the auth. But you can do key mapping: if you pass your key it will transform it to the real one and if not, then it will just return 403.

You can write Lua middleware to do the Auth if you want. The traffic monitor website is protected by us, but the actual proxy is not authenticated as it could interfere with API you are using.

It proxies outgoing calls so it is for API consumers. Apigee is for API providers.

I backed the project and thought I own the device because of: "device included" in the reward levels on KS. Also why the hell I should check forums, comments & discussions when I knew that the device is mine?

Just use common sense. Everybody with half of brain should know that delivery of stuff takes time. I really disliked the author's attitude for "reality check". One almost could get impression that people in tech have no idea

Passenger has some config options to spawn more processes and help the load. But the results will not be much different from unicorn/thin/whatever. Maybe in units of %.
