I have always found Gnome's design to be horrible - the goal of the windowing system and desktop environment is to direct as much attention as possible to the application in focus; to be absolutely as minimal as possible to get the job

Agreed though the effect this page has on how billions of people consume information is huge - I think the idea was to close the gap as much as possible on 'have a thought -> receive information'.

Rust is a paradigm shift; "...to write correctly" most people don't start off the bat with correct IMO. The learning curve is steep with rust.

I would have really liked to see gnome2-esq style DE - bare bones, focus on a great windows like task bar / windows management. I really hated the unity dock thing and I especially hated the color scheme.
