Regarding all the comments here about dial-up and slow connections whether out of preference or necessity, I can't recommend enough having a slow connection and a data limit for helping you concentrate on the things that are most important

I misread the title as empathy encourages analytical thought, which would make sense, because in order to empathize one has to have enough analytic ability to see how another person is thinking, if that makes sense.

It's regrettable you're not getting the feedback you should be getting, as this is something that will really help you stick to it. On the other hand, the very reason you aren't getting feedback is a good one: you're working on obscure arti

The idea of 'hacking language learning' puts me in mind of Kato Lomb [1] a hungarian linguist who worked for the UN as one of the world's first simultaneous translators and knew around a dozen languages fluently. One of the most interesting

I think the idea of the database that knows what words you know is kind of a fascinating idea in a way, in that it goes beyond personal information into personal knowledge, a digital reflection of your actual understanding which corrects it

It's always seemed weird to me that wikipedia has a problem with scaring away potential editors. I for one love editing wikipedia and never found it in anyway intimidating when I started editing in my teens, although I'm probably part of a

Ultimately it's not practical to use it, so even if it is easier to use after the great hump of the learning curve, it's still not good for real world applications, principally because of libraries, support and ubiquitousness . Certain lang

Unix isn't the most used software, but it is probably the best. I think the makers of unix bring with them a strong sense of pedigree, but also something of a expectation that it shares unix design principles. Not sure if it does this or no

If russians do indeed explicitly prefer social stability to free speech and media, then it must be an artifact of a troubled past and one where the divide between rich and poor has always been wider than europe and the americas. I think it'

I don't think a typical sampling of the HN crowd would be familiar with the work of J.D Salinger outside of Catcher and the Rye, but as someone who's loved these stories intensely since my mid-teens, I can't recommend them enough. In fact t

I think you're missing the point of the article at least a little here, although I agree with almost all of your points. Granted, hackers like any other group aren't all heroes or not heroes, and as you say the term is a loaded one already.

Is it possible to identify certain add-ons in firefox even if they aren't in the user agent string, or is that the only information you get from the client? Would be cool if it could tell that I use pentadactyl, stylish, ad-block plus etc.

I guess what I love so much about HN is the generally high amount of content that is relevant to me, which seems to be hard to find elsewhere on the vast expanses of the internet. I can read articles from HN all night, but it doesn't feel l
