Apparently you haven't watched people leave the rental area at the airport.

You are absolutely right, tbh. People make this into too much of a binary choice. I've had cars with terrible physical controls and cars with really well thought out touchscreen controls combined with a lot of automation. It isn't

Yes, but most of them don't have full content available for free. With YT, by far the most compelling reason to pay is to get rid of ads.

YT is odd here. With that, you aren't paying for content but rather for the absence of unwanted content. How much are you paying per hour of unwanted ads?

I think there are some default libraries that support using Google Drive for backups, calendar, and email, among other things? TBH, I'd be surprised if those were in scope.

But... those thresholds do not apply yet. They aren't being held to the same standards as others.

I agree with this. But we have to operate in the world that exists and not necessarily the one that we wish to exist.

I'm getting the impression that some of the competitors haven't built anything to test yet. Based upon that, using the current performance of Starlink and comparing it to the hypothetical performance of others might not be fair. I

I can understand that, but are they measuring Starlink's competitors by the same standard? Overloading backhaul, at least temporarily, is hardly a new problem.

It is certainly better than a lot of existing options, but so is Starlink. I'd have expected an option that excludes Starlink to be something fairly future-proof. And, IME, people in those remote areas are using Starlink pretty success

Their goals are only 100/20mbps? I'd say that part is embarrassing. Given the amount of money involved, I'd have expected them to push for higher than that.

Sure, and that makes sense if the competitors have proven approaches to meeting the requirements. While I expect Starlink to be able to improve, I can see their point that the outcome is far from certain.

To be rolled out in "2023.44.30" -- soon as part of the annual holiday update, which will get hype as a holiday update instead of a recall. Nicely planned from a PR perspective. :)

Thank you, the report itself is more useful than most of the news articles. TBH, this sounds like... not much. The alerts will be louder and more prominent, and maybe it can't be turned on close to stop signs or traffic lights now. Not

IDK, there've been a lot of nice quality of life improvements in those updates over the years. Eg, moving wiper controls to the buttons and configurable quick controls. The cameras have improved quite a bit from software updates too. A

If the goal is to get levels of performance that Starlink cannot provide, then this makes sense? Odd that they'd include comments about Starship in it, though. That doesn't seem like a requirement for continued development of Star

I think so too. TBH, the Propilot system rarely got activated, because of how ineffective it was. But if they are left out of a recall like this, that would mean that we are penalizing systems for being more effective. I'm not sure how

I think that was more true before automatically backed up photos became a thing. Even video chat can make it relevant, given how restricted some are.

Not really. Either one will handle downloading those emails and videos just fine. Rarely will the service at the other end keep up anyway. OTOH, when icloud (or Google Photos) is uploading full in the background with the crummy ISP provided

Weirdly, I don't find it as bad as it was a few years ago. There was a time when my FB and other social media feeds were full of clear disinformation. Now, I mostly just see political discussions with the usual slants. But that never r

I often defend autopilot's use with real drivers. I've driven with it extensively and have seen how other people actually use the system. There are abuses, but no more than I've seen with other systems. And none of them have

This includes Mobileye cars without driver monitoring. I wonder if they will take similar action against various other Mobileye cars? My Nissan Propilot behaves very similarly to AP, just with less capability and even less alertness monitor

I'm not referring to this specific recall here, but, it does get weird in Tesla's case. Years ago, Tesla issued an update that added some features to show warnings in certain cases. It previously showed no warnings because the fea

Not to mention a tax on the company. You have to do all of these mailings no matter what! NVM the fact that customers will get them months after the work has automatically been done. :facepalm

I think there's some of both. Plenty of people with low interest rates have little motivation for payoff. But if you are moving right now for any reason, you aren't likely to be taking on more debt in the process. There's a p

I think there's also an element of competence. Why choose 300/300 over 500(*)! They don't know the difference between fiber and cable, didn't read the fine print showing the low upload speeds on the "500". :fac

I've lived in a place where a nice local company offered fiber. Up to 1gbps, symmetric and very reasonably priced lower tiers too (100-300mbps). They had a monopoly, and people loved to complain about issues that were... mostly their r
