Those aren't for the same purpose, they're for test pilots to use when landing on the lakebed runways that you can see next to the compass. Both the X-1 and X-15, amongst many other experimental planes, landed on the lakebed rather than on

Yes, vehicle theft and hijacking rates are a lot higher in South Africa than in the US and the recovery rate for a vehicle with a tracker system is massively better than for those without. One of the biggest risks with tracker systems is th

That kind of snarky & sarcastic comment is misdirected though, because the residents of the Vatican need to be able to buy stuff just like the rest of us do, it's hardly a signifier of unwarranted wealth. Nor are all Cardinals wealthy.

Yep, that was the passage that Nelson Mandela gave to Francois Pienaar before the final, not Invictus . I'm not sure why Eastwood chose to use the latter poem instead.

If you choose to air your opinion in a discussion forum like HN, you ought to expect it to be judged. Supporting the introduction of more affordable technology into African countries is not hubris, of the text book type or any other, it's p

I'm disappointed that we see responses like this at HN of all places. We're supposed to be more educated and less ignorant about the world here. In simple terms, while some parts of Africa are indeed poor and in need of assistance, the majo

The OP makes it clear that the manuscripts were not destroyed only because of the good work that was done to hide them before and during the Ansar Dine occupation and because most had not yet been moved to the new building. Some manuscrip

I agree that app.net is an awkward name, but you're wrong about it not being about apps: It's developed explicitly as a platform on top of which apps can be built. Hence the File API. The Twitter-like interface you see when going to the sit

While it's an interesting idea, it's not just possible with today's tech. Black rhinos are only one subspecies, white rhinos are just as threatened by poaching and there are around 20 000 of those, so you're looking at around 25 000 rhinos

Too many rhinos dispersed across too far a distance. Unlike elephants rhinos don't necessarily herd in large groups. Many of the rhinos killed were either alone or in a small group of 2-4. I'm not sure flooding the market with fake rhino ho

I'm afraid that's an optical illusion, the main landing gear is indeed fixed along the yaw axis. However some aircraft have main landing gear units that can pivot somewhat along the pitch axis.
