On the contrary, it is not a mundane issue. Traffic infractions and parking violations such as blocking bike lanes or crosswalks directly contribute to a less safe environment for everyone on the street. Traffic fatality is the third leadin

This is cool! @OP, are you the creator of Geoscript? I've never heard about this anywhere else before.

Most database systems are designed to amortize fsyncs when they have high write throughput. You want every write to be fsync'd, but you don't want to actually call fsync for each individual write operation.

It is really crazy how limited debugger options are on macOS. Is it simply the case that there are not that many people writing code in systems languages on macOS outside of XCode?

"Easy to provision" is mostly a strategic feature for acquiring new users/customers. The more difficult parts of building a database platform are reliability and performance, and it can take a long time to establish a reputat

While not about resentment towards universities specifically, I thought this article in The Baffler [1] did a good job of framing a dynamic that, I think, contributes to this phenomenon. My interpretation: As the country has entered the pos

In general, everything allocated within an arena has its lifetime tied to that arena. In lots of situations this is a fine or even desirable property (e.g., a single request context in a server application), but can be a tough restriction t

They're a great fit in many situations but certainly not all. Why not teach programmers a variety of allocation strategies and how to recognize when each might be a good fit?

This is a fantastic post. I really feel like these concepts should be introduced to programmers much earlier on in their education and this article does a great job of presenting the info in an approachable manner.

Great article. Another example I'm aware of is Blockhead, which is an experimental DAW that focuses on sampling and audio clip manipulation. The creator (@ColugoMusic on Twitter) regularly posts clips and progress, which I find fun to

There is a ton of reliable load-bearing software out there written in C++. I don't think the fact that a piece of software is written in C++ is enough to presume that it has memory leaks.

Depends on how you write tests. If you're writing tests by looking at the code you wrote and just asserting that it behaves as written, then yeah. If you're writing tests that assert that your code conforms to a predefined specifi

It would be a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. FoundationDB is a distributed KV database that supports range queries. FASTER is an embedded KV store that only supports point lookups. The use cases for each are rather different.
