I use emacs so that meant practically every prefix character would annoy me at some point. I ended up using C-\ since that almost never gets used by anything (I was surprised it could even be detected by terminals).

I just checked my .screenrc and while I don't have a date in it, the file was last modified in 2010. But that's around the time that I switched to tmux. I've been _very_ happy with tmux over the years… Looking over the screen

I used this exact same keyboard and ADB adapter until 2017 (probably 15 years). I only got a new keyboard when I wanted N-key rollover for games. I love the feel of that keyboard a whole lot and tried to get something similar with my new on

I've got a recent macbook. I use Firefox which lazily load tabs which makes it fairly efficient. I also use "Auto Tab Discard" so tabs unload quickly to keep memory down long term. My Firefox is currently using 6GB of RAM. Fo

You must not had ADD :-). I currently have 2630 tabs in my main window (I admit I may need to prune that down _just a bit_). But that many tabs can only happen with a vertical tab-bar. I started with tree-style tabs but I'm now using &

> But HTTP is a text based protocol. Why do you say that? It supports binary content just fine. If that were true images would be horribly inefficient to send, like they are with smtp (which is an actual text based protocol).

Do you just use document.createElement(), getElementById(), and friends? I've written lots of web apps that just used those. But I've also jumped into React a couple times to learn if it's better or faster or whatever. I gene

I had XFS eat some data once. I somehow got it into a state where it wouldn't mount and wouldn't fsck. Luckily for me it was "just" my backup disk, so after a week of fighting with it I just gave up and reformatted (as e

It's not exactly what you want, but "C-x ESC ESC" will bring up the last run command in lisp form and let you edit it before running it again. That's how I used to repeat M-% replacements before they added the nice histo

Sure, that's annoying but I cannot understand how syncing up to an HDMI signal can take 5 to 10 seconds. Frankly, I can't understand how it's not measured in milliseconds. WTF are TVs doing? Is the protocol so bad at getting

Raid1 actually gets you less than that. If you mirror 5 drives that only gives you 1 drive worth of data (with 4 redundancies). But… you have to weigh it against losing all your data. With raid5 if any 2 of your disks die at the same time t

Your best bet is to pass the maximum supported number for count to the call (SSIZE_MAX in POSIX, 0x7ffff000 on Linux, and hope that the call returns all bytes. And then just hope your read buffer doesn’t overrun? Because 2GB is a lot of b

I almost don't want to say it because if there's a place to look for RCEs on my site, that's the place. It's Apache::MP3 [1], a circa 2001 mod-perl (!!!) application. The one on my site is heavily modified—I added transc
