I'm not saying that we don't have a fascist government willing to censor anything they don't like the look of but the Press TV thing might not be the best example. They had their license revoked after broadcasting a "confession" by Canadian

Your example image ( http://www.sublimetext.com/anim/rename2_packed.png ) is in 8-bit colour. Perhaps you just only tried the awful GIF encoders that couldn't even do the dithering well :)

Doesn't GIF already have a differential animation mode since you can set unchanged pixels in each frame to transparent? e.g. http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/anim_opt/#opt_trans With PNG24 you'd at least get better colour depth. In which

Anything like this is going to need a mandatory Cache-control header that indicates whether the content can be shared cross-domain. Otherwise you can just probe the cache for arbitrary resources, similar to stuff like the a:visited browser

That doesn't make it "significantly more Free" just equal. MIT is not copyleft. I think arguing about quantities of freedom is fairly meaningless. Especially in this case where this is no effective difference in the rights of developers or

I doubt youd even have to break SSL using that attack. Lots of people do SSL termination at the load balancer.

I suspect most TLS libraries will flush the compression buffer after each write call so its highly likely that every request will end on a deflate block boundary already.

Due to the padding of even compressed SSL segments only having timing data will significantly complicate things. You'll be trying to measure the variance in deflate compressing different blocks with single byte differences. You better have

If Android users are bi-modal then simply factoring in the number of Android handset sales is not an accurate comparison either. It sounds like what we really want is a histogram of web usage vs number of users :)
