This is a game developer conference, not a game programming conference. there are a dozen non-technical jobs between "spokesperson" and "developer." Game designer, level designer, UI artist, CGI artist, Producer, QA - these are just a few j

Fiction writers tend to be pretty negative people as well. I think writing and programming have one very important thing in common: most people can ignore the ugly parts of humanity. Writers and programmers spend years staring into it. Wr

For as logical a group as I perceive HN to be, any nutrition related article reminds me of the simple fact that most people can't assimilate new information when it conflicts with previously held mental models. For whatever reason, diet is

I disagree. There are ways of dieting in which your fat composition declines, but your muscle composition stays the same. Most diets, where you simply reduce the number of calories going in, results in a weight loss of 50% fat and 50% muscl

Being a douchebag varies by culture and context. What you're really saying is, let your current society tell you what is acceptable to say and what isn't. How does that work in a society where PC is in overdrive and almost anything you say

People are people and everyone has their flaws. Idols and Celebrities are first idealized, then put under a microscope. Then we complain when they act like mere mortals. Personally, I like having people who say exactly what they think in pr

I used to use Newsbeuter. The deal breaker for me was the inability to hook it up to a daemon on an external server. I wound up replacing it with rss2email instead. Now I read both my email and my news in mutt! :)

I used to play a Star Wars MUD that had permanent death and a similarly aggressive PvP policy. As a result, there wasn't a single character that survived more than a few months. Considering the huge up front cost you had to pay in leveling,

Why all the hostility? People are asking you where you got your numbers, which is reasonable considering your comment provided two percentages and nothing else. Your unwillingness to back up your opinions with facts that we can check and ve

Does mac have problems? sure. But it CAN do what you're suggesting. Just get the right finder alternative or crack open the terminal. Done. What Miguel is talking about in the "just works" category is more basic, like sound and graphics. Ha

I used to feel this way too. My first job was writing a web app to replace a paper approval/overview process at an engineering firm. Aside from some email notifications, it was entirely CRUD and, to cap it off, I was forced to use classic A

Are you suggesting that if I eat some grass fed beef that hasn't been elisa tested, there's a good chance I'm eating gluten? This seems patently ridiculous to me. The elisa test is also flawed - there are situations in which it can't detect

I find it fairly absurd you combine a scientific concept (the placebo) with an emotion based reaction lacking in any evidence. The effects of gluten on the digestive system isn't imaginary - there are plenty of studies that prove otherwise.

I made the switch from Ubuntu to Mac myself about 4 years ago. There isn't a single piece of software I run that runs better on Linux, even some apps that were designed on and for linux (ZSH and Vim, for example). The only thing that might

It hasn't shifted that far. Geek culture itself is still considered "uncool", even in silicon valley. When popular culture uses the term "Geek" they really mean "Hipster." It's the aesthetics that are considered cool, not the substance. The

None of which matters a bit if you just want to take the thing on a 200 mile road trip. People do care about the things on that list, but they care about being able to get where they're going more.

Zipcar and Scoot aren't cab companies. The cars sit without drivers until somebody reserves one online and picks it up. The only difference here is the car can pick you up and drive you instead of having to drive it yourself. Self driving c

Doubtful. In Sf, there are several companies running into problems scaling up to this type of model (ZipCar, Uber, Scoot). Often there aren't enough cars/scooters to meet demand, or the wait for one to arrive will be too long. People who va
