They didn't mention any battery specifications. Chemistry, capacity, weight, nothing. Just a wistful "300km'. That's a bad sign. Battery technology is the gating factor for electric planes and not even calling that out

What is concerning about the transition from goal-based protests to identity-based protests is that the segregation of people has always been at the root of many tragic events in the past. All genocides, persecutions, internments, etc. are

Depends. If he was expecting something else, a negative emotional reaction is easy to produce. Like if you were unveiling the iPhone prototype to Steve Jobs and you pull off the handkerchief and there's a turd lying there.

I can't judge this without understanding the context. Was his company paying for this work? Was he invited for a presentation to a university? Anyone who knows Miyazaki's films would have known he wouldn't like it. So if they

http://www.abc.net.au/site-archive/rural/reporter/stories/s3... Another great example of Aussie ingenuity! One farmer's way of dealing with the 2010 locust plague.

I'm a software engineer dabbling in mech design. I always do mental experiments and paper drawings, but I find that until I actual model it in SolidWorks I don't know for certain it will work. In your mind, do you see a "ment

I find it sad to think that one day we will refer to the "Tusked Elephant" the same we way we now refer to the "Sabre-Toothed Tiger". Evolution may have found a way to survive humanity in this case, but it's reason

This is super cool. What motor does it use? I didn't know such a small, torquey direct drive actuator existed!

That tamed mink is absolutely relaxed. Such an animal would likely serve as an excellent pet, but the regulatory and cultural obstacles are almost certainly insurmountable. Even genetic evolution moves faster than our regulatory system!

Well yeah. If remaining silent was considered "good listening" then people would talk to walls.

It would easier in a newer car to interrupt one of the leads to/from the ECU, which is already located in the cabin. There's so many electrical systems in a modern car; interrupt just one and it's going nowhere.

The only "Randian attitude" towards the poor is that no one should be forced to help them. This case is mandating that shops help poor people regardless of whether or not they want. It's a clear violation of property rights.

I wonder if this style (molecular level) of self healing will ever prove viable on a large scale. It's interesting to compare it to natural self healing systems, which heal on a much higher scale (cellular). The obvious difference is t

I love the concept, but I want more details regarding the process I would use to modify my pet bacteria's DNA. To me the ideal biolab is: digital genome data in, organism(s) out. I know this isn't promising that, but I want to und

I think you've made a good point here. The article talks about emergent phenomenon, and how difficult it is to describe high level dynamics when one is simply looking at the components. A "story" is the way to convey the dyna

I don't agree that failure is absolutely necessary. I think success is generally more informative, because it gives you data about something that works end to end. If your rocket blows up on the launch pad, you just learned that you sh

Were you getting less sleep than normal? I have a theory (which is supported by a few papers I've read) that an extended period of reduced sleeping time can cause what we might call "brain damage".

Hmm. Interesting if this decision was ultimately responsible for Twitter's declining traffic. Perhaps the same will happen to Linkedin? Of course even if it does we won't have evidence of causation, but it's something to keep
