Good times. My first Linux distribution was a copy of RH 6.1 that my parents bought me from OfficeMax. They weren’t too thrilled when I nuked the MBR on our family’s Windows 98 box, but they’ve subsequently benefitted from nearly 30 years o

This really is exactly how I feel. There are too many tradeoffs to switch to non-Apple hardware at this point. I'd love to run Linux/BSD full-time, as many of the apps that I frequently use on my Mac are FOSS (e.g., R, PyCharm, da

Honestly, I sometimes feel like I got work done more efficiently on my 1024x768 displays in that era than I do with my 4K+ monitors now. Modern UIs are bewildering at times. I miss the days where Photoshop and Office had toolbars separate f

Just did the same. I've used this app for years and benefitted from its features. It's a shame to see some of the comments in this thread.

I recall Westwood Monopoly (great game, btw) requiring Win32s to be installed to run the game on Windows 3.x. It also required WinG (which eventually got deprecated for DirectX). I have fond memories of playing around with Freecell and Micr

I've had good luck using tools like piping large files through `mbuffer`[1] such as ZFS snapshots, and it's worked like a charm. [1] https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=mbuffer&sektion=1&...

It seems like total lunacy to me that car manufacturers are putting essential functions (like controlling the HVAC) behind a touch screen. With my old car, I could keep CarPay navigation on the large touchscreen while I could simultaneously

I would add that Zeiss (ZX1) and Leica (T typ 701, TL2) tried this modern touch-first approach at a premium and both products weren't exactly hits. The Zeiss was even running Android with Lightroom preinstalled.

There seems to be some bugs related to Apple shipping broken command line tools (again). I've gotten most of my ports built, but I did install an instance of pkgsrc to get the remaining ones until MacPorts gets things sorted out. Clear

MacPorts has a pretty slick migration feature now. Not sure about Django, but this is the smoothest migration I've experienced with MacPorts in over 15+ years.

You are not. I've been using MacPorts for 15+ years at this point. Started with fink and then made the switch around the days of Snow Leopard. I'm also a BSD user, so no surprise there. I enjoy being able to compile ports with non

I did something similar with `curl` and `sh` about a year ago, when the version of `ddclient` on OpenBSD didn't properly support Cloudflare.

There’s a setting to kinda get around having to use apps like this if you’re dealing w the notch. I don’t recall the specific command, but there is a way to shrink the icon spacing to allow more visible icons. Edit: see https://a

Always have a soft spot for Gentoo. The first distro I ever used was RH 6.1, but Gentoo helped me actually learn how the system works (e.g., partitioning, the FS layout, how a bootloader works, what an init system is, etc.)

Sad day. I picked up an ALIX board quite a number of years ago and it served as my first introduction to using OpenBSD for routing. I've been using the APU2 line since then, and I absolutely love the devices. Really great low-cost har

I usually max out at ~700 mbps running the latest version of OpenBSD. A trade-off I'm willing to take, but others may not.
