Also look at the time line! The dude started three 4-year masters courses (c.s., theo.math., theo.phys.) in a one-year stagger, so during 2001-2004 he was doing all three in parallel. The man seems to be quite the beast, even if he was prob

I think in one of the Lord Darcy crime mysteries they used a magic spell to reveal the last thing a murder victim saw.

I recently considered using Z3 to solve an instruction scheduling problem but opted for a different approach in the end. I'd love to try Z3 for this some time in the future, but it seemed so much easier to implement a more pedestrian

I think if you go down this road, you'll start to see differences depending on the brand and model of CPU you use. Essentially, you're going into the territory of FFTW's "planner" scheme.

I think the advantages are big enough that you can afford to use a flag plus a 63 bit posit and still be ahead.

You mean "predecessor" (twice), "prequel" has a different meaning. It's (roughly) when the medium B is created after medium A, but is set earlier in time.

No, that effect can affect the strength in both directions, and it's not the reason for the higher ABV in "cask strength" whisky. After distillation the whisky is at "still strength" (typically ~70% ABV) and diluted

I think whisky is usually stored at "cask strength", which implies a higher concentration of alcohol, and diluted with water at bottling time.

I often heard the distinction between "soft" real time and "hard" real time, where "soft" essentially means "can be expected to meet the deadline" and "hard" means the real thing, i.e. "

You are correct, the word combination "intellectual property" does not make sense from a natural rights perspective.

Even if the theory was probably still lacking, a solid empirical basis would still be infinitely preferable to none at all.

Yeah, there's a difference though between these aspirations - which I happen to share - and what is a statistically observable human bias that ought to shape our expectations of what's realistically going to happen.

I think it's just that for every complex topic, any general rule will break down at some point. That doesn't tell you that the rule is bad, but to learn how to tell when you're dealing with such an exception.

Where I come from in Europe, things look even more suicidal. Electric power futures for mid-2023 are currently traded at ten-fold the price of electric power one year ago. The end seems uncomfortably nigh.

Yeah, like to do the job properly you need someone who's done the same job before. Become that someone by exploratorily building the thing you want to build before you seriously build it.

Yeah, look at interest rates long term. Money got looser and looser with every downturn. After the last one, the rates went more or less to zero. Everyone had to know that next time we'd be hitting the wall.

For me, DOS was a great learning experience. First I learned to master most of it's intricacies. Then I learned how quickly knowledge like that can get obsolete. I admit the first part was considerably more fun.
