If the article seeks to attack the adblocking system itself, then I would press that the most important utility of adblockers is that they block dangerous elements on sites that the user has no history with or knowledge of. I feel perfectly

Ideally that could be included in the User TOS. Think of it like the Creative Commons model, a lot of standardized information is contained in the string "CC-BY-NC-SA", even though it's been customized for a particular person

The problem with that model is that there are too many competing companies. As it is, you have to subscribe to half a dozen online publications if you don't want to hit a paywall for every other link posted to HN. But even if there wer

A dingbat typeface can't be easily used within regular text of another typeface, which is by and large how emoji are used. The debate isn't about how to standardize the display of symbols on platforms, but how to allow the incorpo

The unicode standard doesn't include the artwork, only a description of how the symbol should be represented. It's up to individual platforms to provide the art.

Yeah, Wikipedia says it goes back to 1999. It's certainly a hit in the West, though. Every social media outlet I see is flooded with various emoji. Clearly people are using them, and Unicode has plenty of space, so why not standardiz

People seem to be ignoring that in the absence of standards, the same thing would happen but potentially vary wildly from one platform to the next.
