Sure, but I'd argue the Facebook friend request is different to, say, the MSN friend request. One felt like adding someone to an address book, the other felt like officially adding someone to your circle of friends. Probably subjective

I think we need to think of social protocols less as a technical solution and more as what I'd describe in my day job as a 'business process'. Sure, part of this will be tech-enabled and parts will be fully automated, but I f

Yeah, most people see the world like this: * Turn up to job. Nice people, good desk, good canteen. Benefits good. * Work is interesting - working on cutting edge, dynamic web experiences that are changing the way we interact with people. *

It's an alluring proposition, though. The student who is just learning about computers and digital ways of doing things will see the problem of voting as 'solvable' and would be able to list a large number of advantages to an

Keybase is an amazing idea which seems to be trapped by the current zeitgeist. It implements smooth and intuitive PKI via a command line, a mobile app and a web/electron app and seem to be rolling it out as a slack and/or dropbox

One of the best examinations of learning, especially with structured media as described in the article, actually comes from a video game: The Witness. A summary of how it does it and why it is so good can be found in this 10 minute demo fro

The reality is that usernames are seen as a computery tech internet thing rather than a business thing. Unofficial, maybe even frivolous. In business you have customer account numbers, bank account numbers, membership numbers, invoice num

I read the opening paragraph and thought 'wow, this guy has clearly just taken the release statement from Duckduckgo's privacy app announcement (or possibly their much-upvoted AMA) and just copied and pasted some statistics.'

I think tone on HN can come across as very derisive or dismissive sometimes. It's one thing to not be unary, but it is another to be able to write down a coherent set of thoughts which critique the platform without sledging it, and con

I can imagine a world where instead of having a car you have a dedicated seat on your cul-de-sac's station-transit. Maybe set up in pods like a one-person version of compartments on 1930s trains.

I see that the DuckDuckGo app is retiring stories. I am sad about this as I really liked the mix of articles it would provide. @yegg, any chance of a stories-only spin-off app?
