A few years ago I was interviewing people for a Perl programming position. The general level was shocking . Asked to rate themselves, many would give themselves a close to the top rating, where later it showed they had never done OO, didn'

Alright, we're discussing "open" vs "free". Right now I don't care too much about semantics.. For anyone reading this that don't know what we're on about , read --> http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.h... (edi

There are plenty of words in this particular universe that are thrown around a lot. You mention "openness". Another big one is "freedom". You can discuss to great length what these words mean, but I'm not going down that route tonight. I do

I give my deepest respect for anyone who fights for open software. I wish I would do more.. I've never met RMS, and as far as I call tell he might be a bit weird, but I still owe him the greatest degree of respect. Thanks to him, and to peo

Agreed, hiring is hard. If you have specific, defined tasks, it's better to get a contractor. For example, for my current project, I hired a sysadmin for about a week to set up a new infrastructure, configuring puppet and so on. Sure, I cou

If you're in London, The London School of Economics and Political Science is having a public lecture next week with this author, Evgeny Morozov. I believe it'll be available as a podcast after the fact, for anyone who can't get there. http

Thanks for the updates. I had an issue with mail forwarding a few weeks ago. Mailed them about it but got no reply (problem was eventually fixed). Still seem to happen occasionally, not very happy with this..

Have you notified zoneedit? I've had several problems when I was moved to the new site.. Hope they sort it out soon, or I may have to go looking for another service. (Any suggestions?) FWIW, I can't log in at all right now, only getting the
