XMPP has existed since 1999, but has only seen mainstream adoption inside walled garden apps that never supported federation or shut it off early on. It was possible to use Facebook and Google chat from a generic XMPP client for a long time

I won't argue against the idea that Trump is on a dangerous political path based around patronage and personal favors, but the law does grant him the authority to give TikTok a 90 day extension. If TikTok has not sold by then and he fa

My reading of the law does not require ISPs to block customers from accessing TikTok. US-based CDNs would be unable to provide hosting, but that just makes it less efficient, not inaccessible.

Your proposal is to decrease the dynamic range of the display. This will certainly achieve the goal of making switching between light and dark backgrounds more comfortable, but makes it worse for viewing photographs or videos. It's als

This satisfies my curiosity about why TikTok didn't try to push app users to the website, which is not so easy to ban. They were always hoping to cozy up to Trump by offering him the opportunity to "save" TikTok. It's on

A difficulty is that the appropriate screen brightness varies with the content it's displaying. Going from a low-contrast dark site to a white background is especially jarring.

I've tried that on some laptops. I do not find it to be a good replacement for the Trackpoint.

As a long-time Thinkpad user, I disagree. I even have a Trackpoint keyboard for my desktop because being able to do mouse things without moving my hands from the keyboard's home row is a huge convenience. It was the deciding factor bet

I've had the websites of two American store chains (Napa and Publix) block me while standing inside their stores because my prepaid eSIM from airhub.com geolocates to Israel. I'd really like to know what's in the heads of peo

In most cases, you can get around it with Play Integrity Fix. This does not prevent me from leaving a negative review. https://github.com/chiteroman/PlayIntegrityFix

This is not a factor I consider when reviewing my experience using an app.

Sort of. In a mobile browser, it almost immediately tries to get me to download the app, which is the opposite of pushing the web version in a marketing sense. Pushing would be telling app users that the app will become unavailable soon

It's not hard to think of reasons that are rational and not otherwise nefarious that an app developer would want to restrict an app to certain verified operating environments, but I think creating a world in which people have less cont

I don't think so. It probably stops them from using US-based CDNs to host content, but that only makes it less efficient, not inaccessible.

I'm surprised TikTok isn't trying to push a web version, hosted outside the USA as an alternative to shutting down. While it would be difficult for a new social media service to gain traction that way, TikTok has a huge establishe

I think it's the combination of trying very hard to usurp the user's control over their device, the lack of obvious reasons to do so, and the size of the brand. It doesn't surprise anybody when a bank does this, and nobody ca

If an app tries to detect that I have root or a non-stock OS, I will give it a 1-star review on Google Play 100% of the time. Everyone who has a rooted device should do this.

I'm not asking for a legal definition. This is Hacker News; in looking for a definition that would enable hackers to correctly classify things most of the time.

I'm surprised they're shutting down rather than trying to push the web version. The law does not require ISPs to block the website or forbid anyone from using it; only US-based mobile app stores are affected.

The mechanics of it are pretty simple: Congress passes a law setting an exchange rate or causing the treasury to do so, then the treasury starts exchanging dollars for gold at that rate. I'll leave whether that's a good idea to pe
