I gave a presentation in the Quantum Computing track and I couldn't sit down to attend the other presentations :/

To complete what you write, the people in the room during the design of Rust were all very much aware of memory-safe languages. Rust was largely designed by putting C++ developers (who were tired of undefined behaviors) and ML developers (w

Thank you very much! I have been attempting to compare Ada and Rust for a while, but never got around to doing it quite so much in depth. So, my take on this is that: - out of the box, Rust is distinctly better at memory safety than Ada wit

How much do we need to progress before it becomes comparable in terms of energy to the (often already rather energy-inefficient) data pipelines we've been using so far? Recall that while the cost per token may decrease, CoT multiplies

I think that there is a strong limit to that: if you don't understand the proofs, you're going to have a hard time understanding when the model explains to you why your code is not correct.

   by Yoric 2y ago

But at what cost? We're in an energy/environmental crisis, and we're replacing simple pipelines with (unreliable) gas factories?

Well, Fuschia has been largely ported to Rust, I believe, so... that's coming.

That is nice! Would this work well with weirder type-based features, such as typeclasses, regions, etc?
10. 550.▲
    by Yoric 2y ago

Probably, yes. That or forcing compilation to always target release.
11. 551.▲
    by Yoric 2y ago

Yes, but don't forget that higher-ups also control, to a large extent, the narrative. Whether laying off developers to replace them with LLMs was good for the company is largely uncorrelated to whether the person in charge of the opera

I wonder if there is a simple way to stop compilation quickly, with a readable error message, if the optimizer isn't able to eliminate the check. edit: There is https://github.com/dtolnay/no-panic

That's funny. We introduced essentially this features in OCaml Batteries Included ~20 years ago. This brings back memories :)

Yes, I think that is actually the greatest weakness of mypy: the ecosystem is hostile to static typing.

Latin America has started long ago, by calling itself America, and calling the USA, well, the USA (Estados Unidos). Still a bit annoying to Mexico (Estados Unidos Mexicanos), of course.

Best guess: at this stage, this is (yet another) move to get civil servants to quit, rather than having to lay them off. Nevertheless, chilling and, I imagine, very illegal.
19. 559.▲
    by Yoric 2y ago

I don't think that the current administration favors talent all that much. In fact, aren't they attempting to get rid of many of the civil servants to replace them with magical LLMs?

As a side-note, you can have a sense of honor, or even consider yourself a good person, and nevertheless murder pregnant women and children as part or your day job. They key is to not consider them as human beings or, alternatively, to cons

    I'm sure there is, somewhere in the deep recesses of the Internet, a camlp4 or camlp5 syntax extension to replace `let`, `rec`, `if`, `then`, `else` with `soit`, `réc`, `si`, `alors`, `sinon` :)

Does anybody want to elaborate why I'm being downvoted? For context, there are several companies selling analog quantum computers, e.g. Pasqal, D-Wave.
26. 566.▲
    by Yoric 2y ago

Note that you do not need error correction for quantum computing. You only need it for digital quantum computing. There's a separate branch, analog quantum computing, that is also very promising.

Seconded. For context, Google was about to launch Chrome and Apple was about to launch the Windows version of Safari. Both companies were clearly on the offense at the time. (and the parent poster was competing with both :) )

Have you looked at how OCaml does it? The historical way is to have a .ml and a .mli files. The .ml file contains the implementation. Any documentation in that file is considered implementation detail, will not be published by ocamldoc. The
