In my country one buys a 5 year old second hand car and put all the money in your house. You drive less than 30 kilometers every day so who gives a shit really?

The tech industry is completely silod from normal society. Women barely exist. And let's face it the kind of people who want to dedicate their life to staring at a screen make for a strange crowd.

And not everyone lived in New York or London. Your average bookshop in a Dutch provincial town wasn't carrying this magazine lol. (The internet opened up the world for all of us living in the boonies- Amsterdam was a 2 hour train ride

Interesting comment! I frequently run into problems with the treadmill touchscreens at my gym. Obviously this is a very sweaty environment. I'm not at all opposed to technology but it should be superior to what it replaces.

I had to pickup something I had ordered online from a postal locker. It had a touchscreen where I had to input the code but it register any input :( Maybe it's just my bad luck but touchscreens always break.

Rice cookers are still a bit of a novelty in Western countries but in Asia they are ubiquitous. It's like microwaves: expensive in the 80s now they are mass produced and sold for 80 dollars.

Libraries are funded by the government. They've been diligently scanning books for decades but nobody has had even the slightest interest in that until their favourite hackerman showed up. Libertarian god complex is so tiresome.

Morocco? If Europeans can stop for 10 minutes whining about democracy and human rights and take a page from China's playbook we can take Africa back.

You misunderstand the primary purpose of a democracy: to prevent civil war by giving everyone a voice. And in this it works remarkably well.

As I understand it the US doesn't have a giant federal government database that tracks everyone who is eligible to vote and their current postal adress.

You can have a undocumented immigrant from Nicaragua mow you lawn or hire a fully compliant landscaping company- who will probably still employ an undocumented migrant. I myself have paid handymen under the table.

Boeing is just bizarre to me. The aviation industry is seeing massive growth in new Asian markets, their only competition has a massive backlog and STILL Boeing is sinking. God knows if they could survive an actual recession.

Now we know why Musk wants Trump to win. To completely subjugate the state to the whims of it's billionaire class. Going back to the 19th century's gilded age. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg78ljxn8g

I think the Chinese already fill that role. We all know why America (and the Chinese) want to go to Mars and it ain't for science.

I was walking past a travel agency and they're advertising Lapland- the home of Santa- for wintersport. I wonder if I'll live long enough for Antarctica as a snowboarding destination.

I very much doubt that every American makes 9k per month. Ofcourse what it really comes down to if poor people deserve healthcare or if we should just pretend that they don't exist (the state of healthcare in Europe before WW2).

The ability to run a trillion dollar deficit cannot be downplayed. When the Netherlands has too much debt politicians and civil servants alike go into panic mode.

The Dutch government is a joke they'll happily communicate via WhatsApp. But then the Netherlands is hardly a geopolitical player. But surely Chinese officials don't use Wechat?

The Kindle is one of the best things Amazon ever did. They made subsidized ereaders and made them cheap. Ofcourse they did it to promote their store but they've never blocked side loading.

The longest train journey possible in the Netherlands would be about 4 hours. People would rather just eat something at the train station. Besides train are as packed as a Tokyo subway.

It's not just about the money. Most people want a lazy bullshit office job rather than hard physical labour. Climbing ladders isn't a lot of fun when you reach 40.
