Yeah, see that's the whole point of those institutions. It's all just signaling. Harvard could let in twice as many people easily, but then it would stop being the "best school" because acceptance rate affects school ran

In response to #2 and #3: https://xkcd.com/1732/ Also, yes. Earth has been substantially warmer in the past. Earth's atmosphere also had higher oxygen levels in the past[1], but it would be very bad for most life

The explanation I've heard is that it's just space being created everywhere at once. There's no center from which everything expands. This VSauce video explains it better than I can (later in the video): https://yo

They would accelerate indefinitely, but it wouldn't break conservation of energy. Gravitational force is inversely proportional to distance^2, so potential energy (integral from 0 to infinity of Force dx) still converges to a finite nu

Is it possible that alien civilizations are using gravitational waves to communicate? Maybe that's why we've literally had "radio silence" so far.

"We can't preserve species over millions of years, so we might as well make them go extinct now" is not a good argument. It's like saying "we can't stop people from dying eventually, so it doesn't matter i

I don't think cryptographic authentication will help very much. It's probably safe to assume that most people susceptible to fake news are computer-illiterate. Or at least, not as technical as the HN crowd. Why would normal people

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think advances in video streaming tech were pioneered by "cam girls" (porn).

Right, but nostalgia is a powerful thing. I'm sure if advertisers knew you watched some movie 20+ years ago they would target you even harder to make you watch the unwarranted reboot/sequel.

Mars is 140 million miles away from earth on average. Even if you could detect signals from GPS satellites on earth they would all be at a single point in the sky. However, that does bring up an interesting idea. Maybe rovers could navigate

GPS requires a bunch of satellites to be in orbit first, and we haven't sent them to Mars yet.
