I'm definitely an Apple person right now, but both webOS and WP7 will get very attractive after the Pre^3 and Mango. Depending on what hardware Apple announces, I'll be very tempted to move to one of those. Apple has done a great job with i

I can't agree with more than the first few lines of the grandparent comment (as it is, as you say, "pure fanboyism"), but there is a point there. Nothing — nothing — before the iPhone had anything similar to it's UI. Not Palm OS, not Wind

It's a font-based exploit, not PDF. The particular implementation on JailbreakMe used a PDF, but it could easily work in @font-face with CSS on any webpage (or, as we did on JailbreakMe, just hiding an <iframe> to the PDF).

I think the solution that Apple would suggest is to just not put an "app-within-an-app". If the feature set is far enough apart that it feels like a separate app that needs a separate menu bar, it should be a separate app. (I actually agree

I was talking about the majority of jailbreaks, not JailbreakMe. Most jailbreaks are done at the low-level bootloader level, which does require physical access to the device (as well as pressing a bunch of buttons in a certain way); and eve

I think the issue is not their security team, who seem to do quite a good job securing iOS (which I'd consider one of, if not the most, secure consumer operating systems out there). The issue is that securing an OS is hard . It's hard to m

Actually, not really. From what I know, the keychain security hasn't been broken, except through brute forcing the passcode. While that's usually possible for the standard 4-digit passcode, it's not always possible. Jailbreaking is a necess

He didn't design the interface (Apple did; it's a clone of the App Store, and I guess I designed some of the iPad UI), but he did work very hard to ensure that the user experience was great. There was quite a bit of discussion about that, e

I'm pretty sure that's correct. I know they take stuff like JailbreakMe seriously — remote code execution exploits and sandbox evasions might cause real issues — but I don't think they care all that much about your normal USB-based jailbrea

As someone who is interested in Android, but is currently being scared off by Eclipse, does anyone know any good resources for developing for Android in something that isn't $BLOATED_JAVA_IDE? I tried vim, but the command-line builds were h

(I posted this as a comment on the TechCrunch article, but not everyone would see that and it might be useful for people here too:) If you want Lion's "full-screen" mode in Chrome (and other apps, TextMate, Firefox, etc), I made an extensio

It's quite easy to set it up to boot of an external drive; I've done that and had 10.4/10.5/10.6 all bootable off of one external drive (split into three partitions).

I'm interested to know how the people targeting iOS releases other than 4.3, 4.2, and 3.1 actually test on those platforms before release (ignoring the simulator for now — many apps don't work there at all, and it often has subtly different

No real need if you don't: there's no additional vector added by the jailbreak to even try entering a password if you don't have sshd installed.

(I just asked BigBoss about this.) No, it's down due to an insane traffic load. It'll be up as soon as either a) traffic gets less insane (not likely to happen soon) or b) BigBoss adds more capacity. I'd also suggest to just keep trying: it

I like the idea of an iOS theme, but I feel that with iOS, you have to either get it perfect or not do it at all. That means fixing the font sizes in the headers, the button layouts and styling, and everything else to exactly match iOS. I k

I'm going to assume this was a mistake. However, I have been seeing quite a few "mistakes" similar to this from Facebook lately. They have a legitimate problem with application spam, but if they are going to try and fight that by banning ap
