(Is that "WHOA" needed? I understand it's in the original headline, but having it in all-caps on the Hacker News homepage is slightly annoying.) Anyway, I don't find this strange at all. If I was going to guess who, if anyone, would be obje

Tap on a PDF and it will ask you if you want to open it in Dropbox, iBooks, or any other PDF reader you have on your device. I keep mine organized in the iBooks categories, myself, but other people use different apps.

No, it uses a custom scraper written by Marco. I've found that both of them work better on some pages and worse on others. (However, I do believe the "Safari Reader" feature of iOS 5 and Safari 5 does use Readability to extract the conten

You still can do that, you just have to use "quotes" "around" "the" "words" instead of +putting +the +plus +sign +before +each +word. This just lets you get that type of search for every word easier.

Counterfeits, possibly? I believe a lot of counterfeits are sold online and those companies might be interested in trying to get rid of those.

Using an almost amazingly simple procedure a few weeks ago, I worked a bit with @tmm1 on figuring most of this out. We actually got custom commands working via both proxy and on-device interposing based methods: http://mobile.twitter.com/t

There is no jailbreak for the iPhone 4S (at least not publicly available), so any hacks like this must be done from outside the device.

No, it's not jailbroken (there's no jailbreak for the iPhone 4S). This is just a feature of the iPhone: if you embed a SSL certificate in a mobile provisioning profile, it will add it to the system list. This is mostly intended for enterpri

For one, he could have submitted it and then have it "held for developer release" — at which point he told them about it. There's no reason he had to have it actually in the App Store here, even if he wanted to test the approval process.

You cannot, but the apps installed via Xcode have the same restrictions. In-app purchasing is at a much higher level than the kernel-enforced sandboxing rules that this exploit was affecting.

I'd agree more if he didn't submit — and get approved — a working exploit in their store. Without telling them about it. Edit: Now, I don't disagree that just banning him from the program isn't a great idea, and that pulling the app and h

It's compressed after encryption, so the effects of the compression is minimal. I believe that my post was correct: due to the effects of the encryption, the compression is almost useless, rendering the large iOS file size essentially equiv

The details here is that Siri seems to use some sort of authentication token when contacting the server that the iPhone 4 isn't sending, so it's rejected. We'll have to see if it's possible to work around that or share the token with a real

Apple has an equivalent page for iOS, but they've done a very good job phasing out anything GPL or LGPL licensed, and are now down to a very small set of tools with any code released: http://opensource.apple.com/

Again, let me ask: you have all these concerns about Facebook optionally letting you upload some data stored on your device to be shared with nobody. Exactly what Google's Contacts, Apple's iCloud, and Microsoft's Live let you do. Why is th

You do realize, on iOS, that most contact info on the device is synced with either Google, or (in iOS 5) iCloud? Facebook is not making this information public, neither are those services. And how can they ask every person in your contacts

That makes no sense, the browser is sandboxed significantly more than any native app. Please stop assuming everything Facebook does is out to personally attack you or your data. It's demonstrably not the case.

The iPhone 4's A4 chip was clocked at 800 MHz, only the iPad had it at 1 GHz. I don't know what the A5 is clocked at in the iPhone 4S, but it's certainly possible it is faster clocked as well as dual-core.

Does the Android world have literally no respect for copyright? This is obviously a leak of copyrighted Google Code and I highly doubt that this website has permission to redistribute it.
