Just as a warning: If you/anyone decides to self host a chef server, you have to get the chef-server cookbook (or your couchdb will never get compacted) and you can't be running ruby 1.9.1 (or the server will have ~1 week uptime before cr

Ideas don't have a dollar value. I'm guessing that not one company who signs a licensing agreement with the patent troll does so because they want access to a library of ideas. They do it because they're working to build a real product, and

The more interesting question here isn't "what % take in the most money" but what kind of money can you expect to see? As in, if you write an iphone/ipad app, what are the maximum returns you could see? It'd also be interesting to find out

To join the rest of the people: We create separate accounts on all of our production and staging servers for every developer. We switched to this after I had to stay about 5 hours late one night to switch all of our passwords on all our ser

I admit that's the way I phrased it, but I meant to say "Why iOS when you have other avenues if you want to work on your own thing?" In other words, iOS seems to be a very bad choice for someone who wants to make money, when you could do a,

Am I reading that right? 100k lifetime value seems to be near the top end of what you can expect from one app. A reasonable salary at a normal job for a senior-level developer is near or a little better than that. If you want to succeed bet

That article was a little lite on details, does anyone have any idea how groupon will get the details about when you spend money at the merchant? Obviously it's not from the banks, so they must have a deal with merchants. But that deal woul

I read it as the first form. I was trying to offer at least one example of why I do not think TDD is the OTM. I read the criminal part of the OP as hyperbole. The article does say there are uses for TDD, (not sure how to do quotes on HN) "W

So it's worse than I thought. How does California justify collecting sales tax from Amazon if Amazon has no affiliate network there, no advertising there, and no real presence?

Straw man? Where I work about half the developers believe that TDD is the One True Way. Unfortunately, this includes the CTO, who wants to force every developer to practice TDD. (along with other 'agile' methods) When I've worked on somethi

I can't seem to find a non-fluff writeup of this story, though I've found a bunch of similar versions. From my understanding of the issue, California passed a law redefining "presence" in a state so as to include companies which have affili

I did not mean you, literally. People who live in states with specific protections regarding side projects are obviously not going to have contracts which contradict the law. But that's by far the minority of workers in the US. The only sta

For development work, contracts stating ALL work belongs to the company is very common. Actually, it's almost universal. A few states have laws that says that clause is void (cali being one of them), but most states don't. If you decline

Yes, that was my point. A decent car will put you at least 10k in the hole, unless you have the cash to buy used from someone who isn't a dealer.

A big part of it (I think) is the student loan debt. 80,000 is huge, and can lead to just giving up and spiraling(I already owe 80k, what's another 2?) The car loan is really low, 10k is just about as cheap as you can get a new car for, and

Percona always seems to have good articles. I think, as he said, everyone shouldn't run out and replace a mysql job queue for their wordpress blog. In a great many cases it doesn't matter. I also like how he never said "Don't use mysql as a

How does the US unemployment office look at someone declining a job offer due to a refusal to sign non-compete (or other part of the employment contract)? Is it the same as if the person got a valid job offer and refused (so they lose unemp

From an employee's or an employer's point of view? A non-compete makes complete sense from an employer's point of view for an employee filling a critical function. If you're running a business and hire a CTO, having them sign a non-compete

What about Groupon paying 10k/month for data on what other deal sites are doing? How much interest there is in, say, food+bar deals would seem to be fairly valuable to their sales force...

This still doesn't deal with the problem of "what you work on isn't your choice" If I get assigned to, maybe, improve the front page by implementing a design from the graphic designer who gets paid more if the front page drives more signups

This article is a bit late. Anyone who has been keeping up with the Diginotar etc stuff knows that: 1, Diginotar is dead in the water now (they've been effectively killed off by browser vendors) 2. The exact problem here is very well known.

I don't have the details, but a modified SSH client could be modified to leak the private key. A modified ssh server can't, since the server never gets the key. Additionally, from this article: http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Kerne

I recently (past couple of months) had to look at chef vs puppet. I went with Chef, since it seemed easier to setup, and I liked the methodology behind it better. That said, there are a few issues around its choice of dependencies (solr, ho
