All that would happen is that the Chinese government would become even more authoritarian and a whole lot of people would be worse off. These fantasies always seem to ignore the human cost.

If there were a way to reliably detect neutrinos in sufficient quantities they'd be ideal since you could send messages through the earth and at near light speed, I suppose.

But all that is the natural and inevitable consequence of capitalism. It's baked into the structure of the system.

How are you going to keep out a mass of starving people? By shooting them? Because that's pretty much your only option once people get desperate enough.

It's interesting to appeal to the plight of Eastern Europeans given that they were also on the list of targets. The Soviets are harming Eastern Europeans, we must nuke the Eastern Europeans!

Disagree. Working at a place where you are or can be genuine friends with coworkers is much more pleasant, and you can't be friends with someone if the only time you escape the sterile confines of the 'all business' relations

That sounds horrible. We should focus on making good products that last a long time. What is the point of making something new and almost identical every 5 years?

A truly strange take. For decades people barely cared about scientists warning of the horrors to come. Participating in the climate movement is a very inefficient way to acquire money.

This assumes that the hypothetical aliens draw (ultimately artificial and arbitrary) distinctions between themselves and other intelligent species. Who knows, they might consider us, another intelligent species, to be 'one of them'

Do you think worker-owned businesses can mitigate this? After all, one of their pluses is supposed to be that the workers can choose to prioritise things other than profit.

This seems like a clear example of a case where the culprit did not intend for the other person to die. Rather, they wanted to neutralize the threat by the means at their disposal, and the person's death was a side-effect.
