Note this is from around 1998. And it seems heavily grammar based. Things might have changed, since the hardware has become more powerful, and some statistical techniques have proven pretty good at Named-Entity recognition.

The fact that it works is completely irrelevant. It has always worked, in about all versions of HTML/XHTML, in that type of simple cases. The important fact is that omitting the html, body, head tags is valid markup. Whether browsers confor

Actually, for this precise use case, it might well be among the cheapest. With a 3-year reserved instance, using the "intensive usage" pricing (since it's always on), and in the cheapest availability zone. I get a price of 6.42$/month. I gu

Interesting. That ssh is full of scary options. I don't think it would work directly through scp. From what I can tell from skimming the source, it is really just a wrapper over ssh. Meaning: it forks an ssh, with the commands 'scp -t/-f' o

The command is executed through the shell anyway. ssh example.com sh would just execute "/bin/false sh", or something like that, on the distant machine.

I've got an account, but a dns ban on *.facebook.com (and their other dns). Three or four times a week, I fire up a dedicated browser (configured with a (somewhat slow) proxy to circumvent my own ban) to check on what happens, and sometimes

5 or 6 years ago, it took a single power failure to basically screw up my filesystem. From the comments on the article, it seems it's not really a solved issue (or rather, people don't consider that an issue). I'd think again before using X

This lacks details. The wikipedia page for ZFS claims that they implement ZFSv28 (same as FreeBSD), but I'm skeptical. While I understand the lack of encryption (it's one of the very latest additions to ZFS anyway), I see no mention of comp

Funnily enough, I find that the autocorrection tends to get in my way more often than not. Being prompted if I meant 'git' when I type 'gut' interrups my thinking flow, while 'command not found' doesn't. And the autocorrect is very bad for

I haven't tried Excel compatibility, but everyone is able to read .doc files, and yet compatibility with Word fails for almost every non-trivial feature (especially layout things). So, I'd be wary of that.

Turning Javascript off (or at least manually whitelisting via NoScript) also can give a quite big performance boost, by simply turning off many useless effects. Making CPU-hungry CSS3 kind of defeats that purpose, of course.

I'm running a mix of small VPS and dedicated servers (most of them below 20€/month), including for receiving emails. Once you've spent some time tinkering with them, taming the OS, and stuff, it's much more flexible than any SaaS. And proba

That's definitely not the use case I would imagine for the Mute switch. The shared office situation should be handled by setting the phone into a "Vibrate only" mode. On "Mute" mode, my phone doesn't even vibrate, and that's exactly what I

In ruby, and I think most dynamic languages, this type of typo is likely to raise an exception. It could hurt, but a simple test run is likely to discover it. The way javascript (which is what is linked) handles this, as amirhhz described i

From what I can get from the applidium stuff, you only need an iPhone for the uids, for now. Technically, I suppose they could be shared, but I guess Apple would find out and terminate the account pretty soon.

Having money and a 'comfortable life' from a purely material point of view doesn't exactly imply being happy. Money can buy an awful lot of things, but not everything.
