There are surely very dedicated people working in some casinos. That doesn't have anything to do with them doing interesting stuff. And the fact that they use "what every other user facing tech company uses" is exactly the problem. I like a

There's a noscript fallback. If w3counter does it's job right, people without javascript should be counted. Those who explicitely block w3counter wouldn't, but that's few people, unless it's in an adblock/ghostery/... blacklist.

Of course, there are. I don't mean to criticize their work. The problem is that most graphical applications come from a linux-focused world, and linux is moving, fast, with dozens of time the manpower that BSD projects have. As for the numb

To clarify, I do use FreeBSD as my everyday (work) OS, and in almost all my servers, and I use a very lightweight window manager (i3). I like it that way, but it's not for everyone. Because most people are used and expect a heavyweight an

To be honest, FreeBSD lacks quite a few things to be a desktop OS for anyone else than hardcore geeks, mainly because it's not at all the main focus of the developers and maintainers. If you want something that just works, you're better o

Not really. iMessage can be used in a transparent way with non-compatible devices (it can just fallback to sms), and it merely loses its advantages. People won't care too much that it's closed, and will still use it. And it won't lock them.

Regarding build systems, ocamlbuild is included with the standard ocaml distribution and gives a high-level interface that is much simpler to use than ocamldep and friends. Especially when combined with findlib.

While some of it is FUD, I'm pretty sure some governments (at least in Europe) are more concerned about privacy and protection of their citizens than Google and Facebook are. My government's goals are much more aligned with mine than Goog

As far as I can tell, there is no tool in FreeBSD base that provides a simple way to check and update all ports using binaries. FreeBSD's pkg_add only handles direct installs of new packages. Upgrade management, things like "update everythi

FreeBSD is (more or less) moving towards pkgng, which has roughly the same goals. I'm not sure what the OpenBSD guys are doing And yes, it's only for distribution. But if it works well, it's the only thing end users should care about. Thoug

I agree, though the extend of that depends on what you put on the machine and it's use. On a typical server, with less that 100 external ports installed, FreeBSD will rarely need to rebuild libs, because most of the stuff links to the base.

If you want to improve your craft, you need feedback. Honest feedback, not feedback guided by other goals (like, making friends with/influencing you).

I agree, though I would think the ratio is the opposite. The thing is, having multiple cards might be a sign of wealth, but it's also a consequence of local culture. In some countries, everyone has a gazillion of cards. In some countries, h

People get searched and interrogated at borders all the time. That doesn't, by far, only happen to crypto guys. So, you might as well give them a sensible reason to interrogate you :)

"being able to make a simple CRUD app" makes them qualified for a bunch of jobs where employers usually look for people who "know how to code". On the short term, really learning to code (whatever that is) doesn't matter.
